Walt Spitzmiller (American, born 1944) BONNIE PRINCE $6,000. – 9,000. Oil on canvas, 24” x 36” Signed $6,000. – 9,000. Illustrated: Sports Illustrated, January 25, 1982, “Bonnie Price of the Flies,” pages 62 and 63. Michael Begg, a producer with the BBC, found himself with the task of broadcasting Prince Charles’ marriage to Diana Spencer to the world. Before the wedding he interviewed Charles at Buckingham Palace. Both were rather stiff and nervous until the Prince asked Begg about his plans after the production. When Begg mentioned a fishing trip, Prince Charles became more animated and opened a drawer that contained fishing tackle. He pulled out a fly from New Zealand made from the tail hairs of a red setter, or as the Prince noted, “the whole damn dog.” After the royal wedding, Begg and Sports Illustrated writer Clive Gammon took the fly on a fishing trip to Canada. They had hoped to land a trophy fish to show Charles and win a coveted invitation to fish the River Dee at Balmoral Castle.

    Nov. 19, 2017

JACK HEMINGWAY LITTLE WOOD, IDAHO by Walt Spitzmiller (American, born 1944)

    Est: $6,000 - $9,000

Oil on canvas, 24” x 35” Signed Provenance: King Gallery Sportsman’s Edge Ltd., New York Jack Hemingway was an avid sportsman and conservationist, who claimed to outfish his legendary father Ernest. A profile of Jack appeared in the Nov. 5, 1984, edition of Sports Illustrated. Written by longtime SI journalist E.M. Swift and illustrated by Walt Spitzmiller, the article was accompanied by paintings of Hemingway in the rivers and fields he loved. In the article Hemingway discusses conservation and his father: “My father lived in a time when, if you didn’t like a place anymore, there was always another place you could move to that was unspoiled. You can’t do that now. You have to make a stand somewhere. That’s why conservation issues are so important. In general, we’re getting better hunting and fishing than he ever got out here, but we have to work a helluva lot harder to get it.” It is because of this that Jack Hemingway donated almost 500 acres along the Little Wood River to the state of Idaho with the provision that only fly- fishing be allowed. He also served as the Idaho Fish and Game commissioner, working to build the quality of fishing by encouraging catch and release.

Under Andre’s Eyes “In 1988 I traveled to Chantilly to have a look at the European way of training and racing. I visited Nelson Bunker Hunt’s estate in Lamorlaye, France and produced several paintings. The biggest contrast to American training was to train in very natural settings. They galloped them in the woods on large shaded trails with dappling light. They also galloped them in large open fields allowing them to cool down and eat the grass.” — Walter Spitzmiller
