Sponholz 69' Overall dimensions: 41 x 49 cm Very good condition Provenance: Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia Finely executed beach scene in delicate colors This work by Axel Sponholz shows a romantic beach view. Left and right the composition is framed by tall pine trees. The viewer can discern a few bathers in the sand, whose silhouettes are merely indicated with tiny dabs of color. The grass, trees and waves are rendered in the finest manner. The soft colors and a lightly tinted sky underline the idyllic scenery bathed in a gentle light. The Estonian-born artist is known for his atmospheric landscapes of this kind. The painting is in very good condition. It is unframed. The canvas is mounted on a linen-covered board. The work is signed and dated lower right 'A. Sponholz 69'. The board measures 41 x 49 cm, the canvas measures 31 x 40 cm. Axel Sponholz (1894-1976) Axel Sponholz was born in Tartu, Estonia. He studied at the art school in Weimar under the German landscape painter Hugo Gugg from 1921 to 1926. After graduating he travelled to Italy. In 1926 Sponholz settled down in Munich, where he worked at the Alte Pinakothek. In 1930 he was appointed to the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne. Later Sponholz again worked as a painter and created primarily atmospheric landscapes. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
