Der Tanz der Salome. Öl auf Leinwand. 83 x 85 cm. Unten rechts in Hellocker signiert und datiert "Stahl Florenz / 1912". Friedrich Stahl erhielt seine Ausbildung an der Münchner Akademie bei Ludwig von Löfftz und Wilhelm von Diez. Nach dem Abschluss des Studiums im Jahr 1886 arbeitet er als Illustrator für die Fliegenden Blätter. Anschließend übersiedelt er nach Berlin, wo er Mitbegründer der Gruppe der XI wurde, der Vorläuferin der Sezession. Eine Reise nach Kent in England bringt Stahl in Kontakt mit der Malerei der Präraffaeliten, die ihn nachhaltig beeinflussen sollte. Ein längerer Aufenthalt in Florenz von 1904 bis 1913 folgt. Die Malerei des Quattrocento, insbesondere Botticellis wird nun bestimmend für das Werk des Künstlers. Stahl entwickelt hieraus einen ganz eigenwilligen, von der Malerei der Renaissance inspirierten Symbolismus. Der Tanz der Salome, ein Hauptwerk aus Stahls florentiner Schaffensphase, ist geprägt durch Skurrilität. Salome, in ein dünnes, golddurchwirktes Gewand gehüllt, tanzt vor der höfischen Gesellschaft des Herodes, deren Teilnehmer sämtlich prächtige Renaissancekostüme tragen. Besonders fällt die Edeldame rechts von Herodias dem Betrachter ins Auge. Sie trägt als Kopfbedeckung den sogenannten Balzo, einem von Isabella d'Este eingeführten Kopfschmuck für adelige Damen. Konterkariert wird die feine Gesellschaft allerdings durch zwei Tüpfelhyänen, deren Interesse allein der Goldschale mit dem widerwärtigen Inhalt, nämlich dem abgeschlagenen Haupt Johannes des Täufers, gilt. Es ist das absurde Zusammenspiel von oberflächlicher Eleganz mit den darunterliegenden menschlichen Abgründen, welches das Werk von Friedrich Stahl so faszinierend wie modern macht. - Wir bitten darum, Zustandsberichte zu den Losen zu erfragen, da der Erhaltungszustand nur in Ausnahmefällen im Katalog angegeben ist. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

The artist subsequently moved to Florence in 1904, where he remained until 1913 studying the works of the early Italian Renaissance.Stahl was pulled in two directions in his career; the pull of society pictures depicting bourgeois subjects with Impressionist influenced brushwork working against his more radical tendency. After a brief time in Munich in 1914 Stahl moved to Feldafing for 12 years. He then returned to Rome in 1925, eventually dying there in 1940 after receiving the Goethe medal under the direction of Martin Bormann.Stahl lived and worked through a tumultuous period of European history and whilst this has cast a shadow over some of his work, his painting is evidence of his pioneering position in German art of the late nineteenth/early twentieth century.

The present scene of the Adoration of the Child with St. Catherine on the left and St. Barbara on the right side of the image gives us the perception of the past epoch of the early Renaissance. Friedrich Stahl, who first devoted himself to Impressionist pictorial motifs in Berlin, met the Pre-Raphaelites there during a stay in England before he went to Italy to study the works of the great masters of the 15th century in the original. The present painting wonderfully illustrates Stahl's individual style, which is based on the past epoch of the Quattrocento, both in the strictly composed composition, the choice of motif, the mystically dreamy scenery and the sense of materiality. The original wooden frame with side tabernacles as part of the work reveals the \"Arts And Crafts\" idea, which celebrated its heyday in England at the beginning of the 20th century and brought artistic craftsmanship back to the foreground. In the present work, the early Renaissance is thus not only received exclusively through painting, but also through the elaborately designed frame, which is based on this period. Stahl, Friedrich 1863 Munich - 1940 Rome Regatta in Henley. Signed and dated lower center: Fried Stahl/ Henley 99. Oil on canvas. 73 x 71,5cm. In 1878 Friedrich Stahl began his studies at the Munich Academy with Wilhelm Diez, Ludwig von Löfftz and Gyula Benczúr. In 1886 he moved to Berlin, where he lived and worked until 1898. At the turn of the century he went to England and to deal with Pre-Raphaelite painting. In 1904 he went to Florence to continue his studies and in the years following he focused on early Italian Renaissance. In 1914 he returned shortly to Munich, before finally settling in Rome. This image dates back to his time spent in England. Since 1839 an annual competition has taken place on the Thames namely The Oxford & Cambridge University Boat Race." It is the oldest traditional rowing ragatta in the world and since 1851 protected under the royal partonage. The painter does not focus so much on race itself, as on the activites occuring around it: a number of well-dressed spectators, drifting in small boats crowded in the wide river. What Stahl is trying to emphasize on canvas, is the atmosphere of a sunny, eventful Sunday afternoon.
