      John Wells Stancliff ( American 1813-1891) oil painting entitled 'The Oceanfront' depicting a seascape of rolling waves with a distant ship on the horizon,in original gilt frame,signed in lower left hand corner. This painting identified as Oceanfront is Actually a painting of Cape Anne and was his National Academy painting of 1880. Good condition,some wear to frame. Oil on board. Image 20 inches x 36 inches. Overall includig frame 31 inches x 47 inches. J.W. Wells was born in Chatham, Connecticut in 1813. He started the first Public art School in America. After a career in teaching penmanship, and having a Dageuerreotype studio in Hartford he traveled to Louisville, KY to workwith Benjamin Silliman in the study of light as well as having a telegraph office with this brother. He work with and for Royal Earl House in the printing telegraph business. In his early fifties he spent his time as a marine painter.

Good condition, some craquelure and minor damage to frame. Image approx. 20 inches x 32 inches. Image. Frame 39 inches x 27 inches. J.W. Wells was born inChatham, Connecticut in 1813.
