Henryk Stazewski (1894-1988). Acrylic and shaped wood on masonite, size 90 x 90 cm (35 1/2 x 35 1/2 inches). Signed and dated on the background. Photo - 2 - Henryk Stazewski on the background of this artwork. Photo - 3 - This painting in the studio of the the artist. Henryk Stazewski is a legend of avant-garde art in Poland. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1913-20. At the beginning of his career he painted still lifes. He temporarily exhibited with the "Formists" group (1922). He also took part in the New Art Exhibition in Vilnius in 1923. At that time, he created under the influence of constructivism. In addition to painting compositions, he dealt with book graphics, designed interiors, equipment, and scenography - these were mostly theoretical and studio works. Polish and international avant-garde groups with which he exhibited and collaborated as a publicist include: "Blok" (1924-26), "Praesens" (1926-30), "Cercle et Carré" (1929-31), "Abstraction-Création " (1931-39), "ar" (1932-39). He also belonged to the Advertising Graphic Artists Circle (1933-39). In 1930, he co-organized a collection of works by international avant-garde artists intended for the Lódz museum (currently the Museum of Art in Lódz). After World War II, he lived and worked in Warsaw. In the 1940s and 1950s, he attempted to adapt to the demands of figurative art. Drawings and paintings about work, construction, as well as monumental projects come from this period. After 1956, widely recognized as the patron of the Polish avant-garde, he only practiced abstraction with a constructivist origin. He created series of works that were studies of planes, lines and colors in various arrangements relative to each other. Despite the appearance of cold perfection, he was able to imbue them with the emotion of a direct touch, a trace of a hand. (38) Ausgearbeitete und offenbar erst nach einigen Fehlversuchen vollendete Komposition auf der Basis einer am unteren Bildrand sich kaum abhebenden weißen Linie, von der aus sich die schwarzen, teils unterbrochenen Tuschebahnen langsam erheben. - Bei sehr genauer Betrachtung sind die vorhergegangenen und verworfenen Entwurfsspuren unter der weißen Grundierung noch zu erahnen. - Auf der Rückseite des Chassis mit einigen kaum lesbaren handschriftlichen Bezeichnungen bzw. Stempeln. - Sehr gut erhalten.

Provenance: MorningStar eArt Group, NC, United States, April 30, 2022, lot 17. Henryk Stazewski was a Polish abstract painter and maker of reliefs, born in Warsaw. Studied at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts 1913 to 20, and was afterwards strongly influenced by Cubism. Participated in the New Art exhibition in Vilno in 1923 organised by Strzeminski and Kajruksztis, and joined the Blok Group of Cubists, Suprematists and Constructivists that resulted. Editor in chief of the first five issues of the periodical Blok 1924. From 1926 adopted an abstract style influenced by Dutch Neo Plasticism and Russian Constructivism. One of a kind artwork.

Ex. -- -- Stażewski studierte von 1913-1919 Malerei an der Hochschule der Bildenden Künste in Warschau. In den folgenden Jahren beteiligte er sich an wichtigen Ausstellungen der konstruktivistischen Bewegung in Polen und war Mitbegründer der polnischen Avantgardegruppe "BLOK". Ab 1924 reiste er regelmäßig nach Paris, wo er eine enge Freundschaft mit Piet Mondrian und Michel Seuphor entwickelte. 1927 organisierte Stażewski die erste Ausstellung Kasimir Malewitschs außerhalb Russlands. Bereits 1931 gründete er das Museum für Moderne Kunst in Lodz. Ab den 1960er Jahren entstanden seine monochromen Reliefs, für die die vorliegende Arbeit ein charakteristisches Beispiel bildet. Geometrische, reduzierte Elemente aus fester Pappe ragen aus der Oberfläche des Bildträgers, so dass das Relief sich durch wechselnde Lichtverhältnisse verändert; es setzt einen Bewegungseffekt, ein Wechselspiel von Licht und Schatten in Gang, das durch die Bewegung des Betrachters um das Werk herum zusätzlich beeinflusst wird.
