    Full length portrait of a young woman in blue velvet dress and red shoes. Depicted feeding chickens grain from her right hand while cinching her dress with her left. Unsigned. Accompanied by a 1992 letter from Robert G. Stewart, Senior Curator, National Portrait Gallery, referring his belief that this could be a work by Christopher Steele and that he was sending a photograph to Mary Burkett OBE (author of: Christopher Steele 1733-1767 of Acre Walls, Egremont : George Romney's teacher. Skiddaw Press). Also included is a 1992 letter from Mary Burkett OBE to Steel discussing this work and its "Steele characteristics" and "Romneyish" look. Frame measures H 54" x L 42.75".

    ATTRIBUTED TO CHRISTOPHER STEELE (BRITISH 1733-1767) Portrait of a Woman oil on canvas 91 x 71 cm (35 7/8 x 28 in.) PROVENANCE Estate of Helen Hooker (1905-1993) Thence by descent in the family CONDITION Observed in frame, the painting appears in age-appropriate condition. Overall very fine and stable craquelure. A scuff visible to the left edge, resulting in a loss measuring 4 cm (1 5/8 in.) in length. The canvas has been relined. Inspection under UV shows a heavy layer of masking varnish with retouching to her face visible under varnish. framed dimensions: 111 x 89 cm (43 3/4 x 35 in.) N.B.
