Vintage silver print 22,8 x 33,8 cm (9 x 13.3 in) Signed, titled and annotated "Vintage" by the photographer in pencil and ink on the reverse, his copyright agency stamp on the reverse PROVENANCE directly from the photographer LITERATURE I Grandi Fotografi di Magnum Photos, Milan 2005. Nearly three million people, almost two million Ghanaians among them, had to leave Nigeria within two weeks in 1983, when the Federal Republic suddenly decided to solve the problem of its failing economy by deporting immigrants - such are the figures behind the greatest migration of nations in Africa's recent history. Chris Steele-Perkins, already a well-travelled photographer at the time and also a full member of Magnum since that year, was present and able to document the humanitarian tragedy in the border areas of neighbouring Ghana with his Leica M4. The publication of these photographs in Western magazines made the tragedy visible. The present image was taken by Steele-Perkins from the vehicle of an aid organisation distributing loaves of bread to people camping out by the thousands on the roadsides.

Vintage silver print 33,6 x 22,5 cm (13.2 x 8.9 in) Signed, titled and annotated "Vintage" by the photographer in pencil and ink on the reverse PROVENANCE directly from the photographer LITERATURE W. Manchester (ed.), In our Time. The world as seen by Magnum photographers, London 1989, p. 211; Chris Steele-Perkins/Richard Smith (eds.), The Teds, Stockport 2002, p. 11. Chris Steele-Perkins was 29 years old when he immersed himself in the London world of the so-called Teds. "A night out with the Teds was generally a good crack - sometimes some violence, some vomit on the carpet, but generally a rock'n'roll party", he photographer recalls. The Teds, also known as Teddy Boys, were a social rather than a political movement developing in London in the early 1950s. The Teds' trademarks were large, Elvis-like quiffs, tight trousers and knee-length jackets with broad lapels, the kind popular during the times of the British King Edward VII, thereby demonstrating their fashion superiority over the middle class. They did not consider theirs a subculture. Their music was American rock'n'-roll, arousing the hostility of the middle class. Steele-Perkins' interest in Great Britain's various social scenes is documented by numerous books. His documentation of the Teds led to the publishing of the legendary coffeetable book The Teds, featuring texts by Richard Smith. Chris Steele-Perkins ist 29 Jahre alt, als er in die Londoner Welt der sogenannten Teds eintaucht.
