Luigi Steffani was born on February 19, 1827, in San Giovanni Bianco, in the province of Bergamo, and died in Milan on April 19, 1898. Renowned primarily as the author of esteemed marine paintings, his artistic career was marked by travel, independent study, and extensive artistic production. In 1844, he moved to Milan, where he deepened his studies without attending any academy. In 1854, he embarked on a long journey through Europe, during which he gathered impressions that proved fundamental to his subsequent artistic career. His official debut came in 1857, at the Brera Exhibition in Milan. After further travels abroad, he established his residence in the Lombard city and joined the brigade of artists that included such personalities as Induno, Pagliano, Mosè Bianchi, and Pompeo Mariani. Steffani was a prolific artist, showing his works in numerous Italian exhibitions as well as in Paris and London. Some of his notable works include "The Marina," "The Old Port of Ostend," "The Pasture on the Street," "Returning from Fishing," "A Building Site," "Low Tide," "Venice at Ponte del Viu," "Ligurian Riviera," and many others. His participations in exhibitions include those in Parma in 1870, Turin in 1880, Milan in 1881, Rome in 1883, Turin in 1884, Milan in 1886, Venice in 1887, Bologna in 1888, and Milan in 1900. Some of his works are preserved in important institutions, such as the Museo Civico in Turin and the "Paolo and Adele Giannoni" Gallery of Modern Art in Novara. Among his best-known works are "An Evening at the Beach," exhibited in 1900 in Milan, and "Island of the Cyclops" in Sicily. Si formerà, infatti, viaggiando in giro per l'Europa, tra Dusseldorf, Parigi e Londra, dove guarderà con grande interesse al paesaggismo romantico, per poi arrivare in Italia, a Napoli, Venezia, Palermo, Roma ed infine Milano, qui farà il suo esordio alla Mostra di Brera del 1857. Ed è proprio a Milano che troverà la sua affermazione come paesaggista, pittore di marine e scene di genere, confrontandosi con Gerolamo Induno, Eleuterio Pagliano, Mosè Bianchi, arrivando fino a condividere lo studio con il Gola. Il risultato di queste esperienze variegate è la sua capacità di unire al tradizionale verismo lombardo, elementi del paesaggismo internazionale, permettendogli di riscuotere fin da subito consensi positivi dalla critica, che lo porteranno alla nomina di socio onorario dell'Accademia di Brera e poi all'ottenimento della cattedra di paesaggio. La sua pittura si distingue quindi per una luminosa nitidezza e una minuziosità dei particolari, che ben ritroviamo nella tela qui illustrata, dove a spiccare è proprio la resa degli effetti luministici e atmosferici, volti ad enfatizzare quelle condizioni meteorologiche che contraddistinguono il territorio lombardo. Il paesaggio è definito da alberi privi di fronde, con la lontana prateria che si perde in un orizzonte denso di nebbia, reso attraverso un sapiente gioco chiaroscurale, con cui l'artista riesce a far rivivere quelle sensazioni di cui si parlava poc'anzi, registrando una perfetta armonia tra l'uomo e la natura, che riusciva a riprodurre con mirabile verità ed eleganza. Un dipinto con lo stesso soggetto, molto simile per composizione, sarà esposto a Brera e presentato all'Esposizione Universale di Parigi nel 1902 e successivamente conservato presso l'Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera (Reg. 1943, inv. 81).
