      James Louis Steg (American/Louisiana, 1922-2001)

      Est: $600 - $800

James Louis Steg (American/Louisiana, 1922-2001), "Masked Rex Riders", 1968, mixed media on shaped wood panel, signed and dated lower right, 44 1/4 in. x 33 1/2 in., unframed. Note: James “Jim” Steg, now considered the most influential New Orleans printmaker of the twentieth century, only recently received this prestigious designation. A posthumous solo retrospective at the New Orleans Museum of Art in 2017 titled “Jim Steg: New Work” sparked a renewed interest in his oeuvre, focusing not only on printmaking, but also on his innovative forays into the fields of photography, collage, and sculpted wood. Steg spent much of his life as the head of the graphics department at Newcomb College teaching methods of printmaking, some of which he himself had pioneered. Before his tenure at Newcomb, Steg studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and served in the Army during WWII as part of a division known as the Ghost Army, a group of approximately 1000 artists who used subterfuge to deceive the enemy with inflatable tanks and theater props. Although he was best known for his prints, Steg’s imaginative spirit led him to experiment in new media, resulting in works such as the collage on a rough wood panel offered here. The figures, members of the Krewe of Rex, are formed of stiff material, sculpted into the shape of masked men. The piece seems to allude to a darkness behind the masks in an unpolished, intimidating rendering of the figures. Ref.: Steg, J.L. “About the Artist”. J L Steg. www.jimsteg.com. Sep. 15, 2018

      James Louis Steg (American/Louisiana, 1922-2001)

      Est: $1,500 - $2,500

James Louis Steg (American/Louisiana, 1922-2001), "Masked Rex Riders", 1968, mixed media on shaped wood panel, signed and dated lower right, 44 1/4 in. x 33 1/2 in., unframed. Note: Charles T. Bowling’s career in the fine arts started at the age of thirty-five, when he enrolled at the Dallas Art Institute and began winning awards and solo shows at area galleries. Bowling was closely associated with the "Dallas Nine," a group of (more than nine) painters, printmakers, and sculptors active in the 1930s and early 1940s who depicted the land and people of the Southwest. He worked full-time as a draftsman for the Texas Power and Light Company for forty-nine years, creating art and attending classes in his spare time. Bowling was drawn to rural landscapes as his primary subject matter, using a bright palette of ocher, rust and gray with contrasting areas of blue and green to capture the colors of Texas. “The Quiet Pond Spring” offered here is a beautiful example of Bowling's skill as a colorist in the later years of his career. The artist was sadly forced to abandon his craft in 1965 due to failing eyesight. Ref.: Curlee, Kendall. “Bowling, Charles Taylor.” Texas State Historical Association. www.tshaoline.org. Est: $500 - $800

James Steg (American/Louisiana, 1922-2001), "Walk of Five Men", intaglio print together with original plate, signed lower right, titled and numbered "10/25" lower left, sight 24-3/8" x 37-3/8". Glazed, matted and framed. Collagraphy is derived from the Greek word Koll or Kollo, meaning glue and refers to a print making process in which materials are glued to a rigid substrate to form the plate. James Steg was a pioneer in developing this technique. A professor of art at Newcomb College for 40 plus years, Steg was constantly pushing the boundaries of conventional techniques. The lot offered here is a rare combination of process (original plate) accompanied by the finished art work. The Complete Collagraph: The Art and Techniques of Printmaking from Collage Plates by Clare Romano and John Ross (1980) was written after an exhibition of Steg?‚…s innovative new technique at a New York City Gallery. His work is included in the permanent collections of more than sixty museums and institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian Institution.
