EDWARD STEICHEN (1879-1973) Vauquois Mine Crater (Argonne Sector). Circa 1918. Silver print, the image measuring 9x6⅝ inches (22.9x16.8 cm.), the sheet slightly larger, with Steichen's title in pencil on verso. Provenance Harry Lunn Major Edward J. Steichen, who was chief of the Photographic Section of the American Expeditionary Forces from 1917-19, made a series of aerial photographs during WWI, mostly in France, which he assembled in an album after his discharge, held now by the Art Institute Chicago. His caption in the album includes the note "scene of some of bitterest fighting of the war an active sector for four years." The museum notes that these craters still exist today and are nearly 200 feet in diameter. Steichen's handwriting on the verso of this print was authenticated by curator Grace M. Mayer.

EDWARD STEICHEN (1879-1973) The Flatiron - Evening, from Camera Work XIV. 1904; printed 1906. Three-color halftone print, the image measuring 21¼x16½ cm, 8⅜x6½ inches; double mounted to Japan tissue and the original page mount 30½x21½ cm, 12x8½ inches. Designed by Daniel Burnham at the turn of the 20th century, the Flatiron Building was considered a groundbreaking skyscraper in the United States due to its early steel skeleton structure and triangular design. Today, it remains one of the most iconic buildings in New York. Upon completion in 1902 it was one of the tallest buildings in the city and its magnificence has been beautifully recorded by Steichen in this evocative photograph in 1904. With its atmospheric yet modernist aura, the photograph captures the interplay between the tree branches in the foreground, the carioles on the rainy streets, and the newly built Flatiron that we can distinguish in the background at dusk. Until today, this image stands as an iconic depiction of the building and a groundbreaking image in terms of pictorialist aesthetic. Steichen made three color variations in brown, blue-green, and yellow-green-black by using different proportions of pigments in each gum process over platinum. These prints are extremely rare on the market. The best-known greenish variation was popularized as a three-color halftone print by Alfred Stieglitz in the publication Camera Work XIV in 1906. The Flatiron - Evening is not only a strong testimony of modern New York but also a subtle chromatic study of twilight with its undoubtedly Japanese influence. The composition itself integrates natural and modern features that cohabit harmoniously, and the half-tone process allowed Steichen to achieve a painterly quality through subtle tonal variations by manipulating the dot patterns in the printing process. And like Japanese woodblock prints, this colored print was processed with multiple inks in the days before practical color photographic processes became available.

Edward Steichen was a key figure in 20th century photography, directing its development as a leading photographer and influential curator. Steichen arrived in the United States in 1881. He painted and worked in lithography, before turning to photography in 1896, and first exhibited photographs at the Philadelphia Salon in 1899. Steichen became a naturalized citizen in 1900 and, after exhibiting at the Chicago Salon, received the support of Clarence White, who introduced him to Alfred Stieglitz. Steichen practiced painting in Paris intermittently between 1900 and 1922; there he met Rodin and was in contact with modern art movements, so he was able to advise Stieglitz on the selection of exhibitions. In 1901 he was elected a member of the Linked Ring Brotherhood in London, and in 1902 he co-founded the Photo-Secession and designed the first cover of Camera Work, in which his work was often published. In New York, Steichen helped Stieglitz establish the Small Galleries of the Photo-Secession, which became known as "291," and in 1910 he participated in the International Exhibition of Pictorial Photography in Buffalo. During World War I, he directed aerial photography for the Army Expeditionary Forces. Shortly thereafter he gave up painting, along with the vestiges of Pictorialism, and adopted a modernist style. He was chief photographer for Condé Nast from 1923 to 1938, while doing freelance advertising work. Commissioned as a lieutenant commander in 1942, Steichen was appointed director of the U.S. Naval Photographic Institute in 1945; there he supervised combat photography and organized the Road to Victory and Power in the Pacific exhibitions. He was director of photography at the Museum of Modern Art from 1947 to 1962, and was responsible for more than fifty exhibitions, including The Family of Man in 1955, the most popular exhibition in the history of photography. Steichen received countless awards and honors, including the title of Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor, an honorary fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Art Directors Club of New York Award, the U.S. Camera Achievement Award for "Most Outstanding Individual Contribution to Photography" (1949), and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1963). Major exhibitions of his work have been held at the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris, the ICP and the George Eastman House.

From 1901, Steichen spent a year working on a portrait of Auguste Rodin (1840–1917), the most important sculptor of his era. His studio was densely packed with blocks of marble as well as clay, plaster and bronze works. Steichen thus combined two negatives: a photograph with the sculpture "The Thinker" and a portrait format with Rodin in front of the marble relief of the "Monument to Victor Hugo", which he used in reverse (the original version was published in Camera Work in 1903). In the combined image, he used painterly effects to suppress the texture of the marble and bronze, thus emphasising the presence of the sculptures as living beings; he thereby succeeded in depicting the sculptor in a symbiotic relationship with the heroic world of his creations. This portrait is considered a major work of Pictorialism and was produced in various techniques; examples can be found in the most important collections of photographic art.
