HANS ADOLF STEINER (DATES UNKNOWN) SAMMLUNG / FLUGTAG. 1913. 39 3/4x27 1/4 inches, 101x69 cm. Huber, Anacker u. Cie., Aarau-Luzern. Condition A / A-: minor repaired tears and creases at edges. Japan. A one-day air exhibition to benefit Swiss "military aviation." The Alpine Nation's first foray into air power came in 1900 with the establishment of an observation balloon force. By 1912 the Swiss Officers Association began soliciting public funds to support military aviation, for which this event was certainly a part. In 1914 the Swiss Air Force was officially established, although it remained a branch of the armed forces until 1936. Here, the artist depicts a Blériot Model VIII taking to the air above the mountains and rivers of Switzerland. Looping the Loop pl. 63.
