(3) NOTES Jacob Hendrik Stellingwerff was born in Zwolle around 1773. He was the son of Willem Lubertus Stellingwerff, who was a silversmith, and Elisabeth Hendrina Peirolet. It is assumed that Stellingwerff came to Amsterdam around 1794, but only in 1803 he was registered as a citizen. In the same year he married Gesina Voorthuys (Zwolle c.1776 - Amsterdam after 1823) and he also established his own workshop. It has been suggested that during his earlier years in Amsterdam Stellingwerff had worked for his uncles' firm Peirolet. In 1802 this firm was taken over by Adrianus Bonebakker and Diederik Lodewijk Bennewitz, and during the following years Stellingwerff became one of the most important craftsmen who produced silverware for the newly established shop Bennewitz en Bonebakker. This firm was specialised in large silver such as: chandeliers, plateauds, cafeti‚res, thŠi‚res et autre grosse argenterie. After the death of Stellingwerff in 1823 his widow continued the business.
