Stengel was an American impressionist landscape painter who was a founding member of the Yonkers School of Design and Yonkers Art Association. He is best known today for his impressionist scenes of Yonkers and New Hope, which often depict tranquil images of canals and rivers.Stengel was born in Newark, New Jersey, on September 26, 1866. When he was three years old, he moved with his family to Yonkers, New York. Stengel's elementary school teachers first recognized and encouraged his talent for drawing and painting. At age fourteen he left school and began working for the Alexander Smith and Sons Carpet Company in Yonkers. While working at Alexander Smith and Sons Carpet Company, Stengel began taking life drawing classes in the evening at the Art Students League in New York City. In 1886 the Smith Carpet Company, having noticed Stengel's talent for art, sponsored him to train at the Académie Julian in Paris for two years.

Stengel was an American impressionist landscape painter who was a founding member of the Yonkers School of Design and Yonkers Art Association. He is best known today for his impressionist scenes of Yonkers and New Hope, which often depict tranquil images of canals and rivers. Stengel was born in Newark, New Jersey, on September 26, 1866. STENGEL (NJ/NY/PA/CT, 1872-1937) - "Painting the Pram, New Harbor", oil on canvas, signed lower left, titled on the frame tag, circa 1930, depicting a man at work on the waterfront of the small Maine coastal town, in hand carved gilt Arts & Crafts frame, OS: 34 3/4" x 39 3/4", SS: 24 1/2" x 29 1/2". Fine condition. One of the "New Hope" Impressionists from Pennsylvania, Stengel summered in Maine. This painting is illustrated on page 63 with text on page 62 (as "Afternoon on the Docks") in the book "New Hope Impressions, George J. Stengel, 1866-1937" by Thomas C. Folk, 2008. It was also featured in the American Art Review magazine of February 2008, page 153.
