Gerasimos Steris (1895-1987) Ariane à Naxos Huile sur toile signée en bas à gauche Steris, messager du surréalisme en Amérique Élève du lycée franco-hellénique d'Alexandrie, Gerasimos Steris est doublement diplômé des Beaux-Arts d'Athènes et de Paris. Installé dans la capitale française de 1919 à 1926, il assiste aux premières loges à la naissance du surréalisme à partir de 1924. De retour à Athènes, il devient l'un des chefs de file de l'école moderne grecque, imposant une esthétique empruntant aux cubisme et au surréalisme découverts à Paris. En 1936, il quitte définitivement l'Europe et s'installe aux États-Unis où contribue à y exporter le surréalisme. Le tableau que nous présentons appartient à l'une de ses séries les plus connues, Ariane à Naxos, et constitue l'une des plus importantes redécouvertes d'oeuvres de l'artiste de ces vingt dernières années. Conservée dans la même famille à Salonique puis à Paris depuis le début des années 1930, cette huile sur toile est caractéristique de l'art pionnier de Steris. Deux tableaux de cette série se rapprochent particulièrement de la version que nous présentons. Le premier (huile sur toile 48 x 65 cm), conservé à la Collection Tom Latsos aux Etats-Unis, est reproduit dans le catalogue de l'exposition "Steris, Works from the Koutoulakis Collection" présentée au Musée Benaki à Athènes en 2008. Les deux parties gauche, ainsi que les coloris, sont identiques et la nôtre diffère par le traitement de la nature morte au premier plan et de la figure féminine placée derrière Ariane. La seconde oeuvre à rapprocher, plus abstraite, figure dans le catalogue de la rétrospective "Steris" présentée à Salonique en 1991 ainsi que dans la thèse de doctorat soutenue à l'Université d'Athènes par Etolia-Ekaterini Martinis en 1998 (planche 41). Born in Cephalonia, Steris' early training was at the School of Fine Arts in Athens. While in Greece his work was filled with a sensitivity for colour and line. Compositions of distant island landscapes and human figures dominated his oeuvre. Steris remained in Greece until 1936 when he left for New York. There he spent the rest of his life, changing his name to Guelfo Ammon D'Este and claiming he was of French origin.
