Silver prints, the images measuring 5½x4⅛ to 13⅜x8¾ inches (14x10.5 to 34x22.2 cm.), and the reverse, the mounts 19x14¾ inches (48.3x37.5 cm.), each with Stern's or Auerbach's (or both) signatures in pencil on mount verso; each overmatted. Elephant folio-sized brown cloth clamshell box with a typeset label; with the title page plate list, preface by Christine Sander, essay by Ellen Auerbach, and colophon with edition notation 4/35 in ink; contents loose as issued. Buenos Aires: LA AZOTEA, (1988) Ringl and Pit were the childhood nicknames of Grete Stern (Ringl) and Ellen Auerbach (Pit). Both studied with Walter Peterhans, a photography instructor at the Bauhaus. Together, they established a photography studio in 1930 in Berlin, but their promising partnership ended in 1933 when they decided to emigrate. Often using mannequins, wigs, and other symbols of femininity, Stern and Auerbach worked on the representation of the "modern woman," and questioned the artifice and masquerade of feminine identity. RINGL+PIT Fotografie ringl+pit ... Twelve photographs by Grete Stern and Ellen Auerbach, 1929 to 1933. New York: Sander Gallery Editions, 1985. Copy III of fifteen artist copies (from a total edition of 50). Publisher's portfolio of cloth-backed boards. 19 x 15 inches (48.5 x 38 cm); three text leaves (including title and limitation), and twelve gelatin silver prints on mounts, versos signed in pencil by the artists. Four mounts slightly toned, overall in fine condition. The work of Ringl+Pit (the name was based on the nicknames of the firm's two photographers, Grete Stern and Ellen Auerbach) shows a strong Bauhaus aesthetic. Both were students of Walter Peterhans, from 1929 the head of the photography department at the German Bauhaus in Dessau. They emigrated from Germany in 1933, upon Hitler's accession to power. Grete Stern was responsible for the extraordinary portrait of Bertold Brech that graces this portfolio; Ellen Auerbach for the fine portrait of Grete. The prints were printed by the artists on Agfa Portriga 111 and 118 and Kodak Ektalure G. C
