          • John C. Fremont Endorsed Cincinnati Railway Tunnel Co. Stock Certificate
            Jan. 06, 2022

John C. Fremont Endorsed Cincinnati Railway Tunnel Co. Stock Certificate

            Est: $300 - $400

John C. Fremont Endorsed Cincinnati Railway Tunnel Co. Stock Certificate 1p, measuring 10.25” x 5.75”, Cincinnati, dated March 1, 1872. A Cincinnati Railway Tunnel Company certificate, No. 88, issuing 100 shares ($50 each) of Capital Stock to Messrs Fremont and Morton. Signed "J.C. Fremont" on verso, countersigned by Morton. Signed on the front by company President A.J. Hodder and Secretary George B. Ellard. Blind embossed seal at the bottom center. With faint edge toning and soiling. Boldly signed. John C. Fremont (1813-1890), was an explorer, politician, and military officer, famous for his Western exploration with Kit Carson as a guide. He came into the railroad business after the state of Missouri took possession of the Pacific Railroad in February 1866, and he bought it in a private sale. However, less than a year later the railroad was repossessed by the state when Fremont was unable to pay the second installment on his purchase. He subsequently became interested in the construction of railroads and got involved with such businesses as the Cincinnati Railway Tunnel Company. A year after this certificate was signed, the Panic of 1873, caused by over-speculation in the railroad industry, and the depression that followed, wiped out much of Frémont's remaining wealth. Fremont was forced to sell his assets in 1875 and to move back to New York City. John D. Rockefeller & Henry M. Flagler Signed Standard Oil Trust Stock Certificate

            Est: $2,000 - $3,000

John D. Rockefeller & Henry M. Flagler Signed Standard Oil Trust Stock Certificate A "Standard Oil Trust" stock certificate signed by two of its company co-founders, John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937) and Henry M. Flagler (1830-1913). Matted and framed in a handsome mahogany-finished double-sided frame, with a window revealing the back of the document verso. Not examined out of the frame. The overall size of the frame is 20.75" x 13" x 1." The partly printed and partly handwritten brown type stock certificate, number A1299, is dated October 24, 1888 and granted 100 $100 shares to "R.J. Kimball + Co." Rockefeller has signed as "J. D. Rockefeller" in his role as President at lower right; Flagler has signed as "H M Flagler" in his role as Secretary at lower left; and the company treasurer has signed at the center. The shares were transferred to G. Blandy on the same day, as shown in the transfer section verso. The certificate is affixed to the record-keeping portion at left, and bears the usual co-signatures, stamps, and clerical markings. Expected light folds and a few pinholes found along the top edge, else near fine. The sight size of the document is 15.125" x 7.5." John D. Rockefeller and Henry M. Flagler were two of the principal co-founders of the Standard Oil Company, established in Cleveland, Ohio in 1870. The two industrialists practiced horizontal and vertical integration to neutralize any competition in the industry, allowing them to create the largest oil refining monopoly in the United States. The stockholder, R.J. Kimball & Company, was a banking and investment concern founded by stockbroker Robert Jackson Kimball (1836-1903). Kimball earned a coveted seat on the New York Stock Exchange in 1869 and was heavily invested in infrastructure, like telegraph and railroad companies. Kimball & Company-held stocks were transferred to "G. Blandy" of 16 Broad Street, New York City. This was Graham F. Blandy (1868-1926), an up-and-coming stockbroker. According to a listing found in a Biographical Directory of the State of New York from 1900, Blandy was educated in Europe and the United States before serving as the director of a livestock company and a paper manufacturing plant. Blandy's holdings were so significant that he bequeathed two-thirds of his property near White Post, Virginia, an estate called The Tuleyries, to the campus of the University of Virginia in 1926. This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
