Gabriele Stock-Schmilinsky(1903 Hamburg - 1984 Hamburg). Kurenkähne auf Nidden. 1939 Watercolour and pencil. Monogrammed and dated lower right. With inscriptions IV/36'and 18'on the reverse. On Ingres laid paper by Hahnemühle (with watermark). 48 x 62,2 cm (18,8 x 24,4 in), the full sheet. Provenienz: From the artist's estate. Gabriele Stock-Schmilinsky began training as an artist at the Gerda Koppel Private Art School in Hamburg (1922-25), where her teachers included Friedrich Ahlers-Hestermann, before studying at the Landeskunstschule am Lerchenfeld from 1930 until 1933. In 1937/38 the artist trained at the Berlin Werkkunstschule and then took over the Gerda Koppel Art School in Hamburg. Stock-Schmilinsky at first had stylistic affinities with Expressionism. She worked mainly in watercolour, the medium best suited to her spontaneous approach that was inspired by the impressions of a moment. In the 1930s the artist went to Paris and Italy several times, accompanied by her friend Eduard Bargheer, to study art. She also spent a great deal of time on the North Sea and the Baltic. Our fresh, delicately coloured work, in which the artist's talent as a colourist is amply apparent, was done in Nidden. [NB] Good overall impression. Margins with minor ripples due to the technique. The centre with a minor vertical crease mark. The upper margin with a negligible crease mark. Upper left with minor pale stains. All in all with isolated soft foxmarks.

Gabriele Stock-Schmilinsky (1903 Hamburg - 1984 Hamburg). Häuser am Tegernsee. Um 1938 Oil on canvas . Monogrammed lower right. With inscription 'Gmund / Tegernsee' on the stretcher.70,5 x 90 cm (27,7 x 35,4 in). Provenienz: From the estate of the artist. Ausstellung: Gabriele Stock-Schmilinsky. 1903-1984. Gemälde und Aquarelle, Hamburgische Landesbank, 27. June 2002 - 17. January 2003, cat.no. 8 (with the label on the stretcher). Gabriele Stock-Schmilinsky began training as an artist in 1922-25 at the private Gerda Koppel art school in Hamburg before serving an apprenticeship as a bookbinder. From 1930 until 1933 she studied art at the Landeskunstschule am Lerchenfeld. In 1937/38 the artist trained in art education in commercial art at the Werkkunstschule, before accepting an appointment as head of the private Gerda Koppel art school in Berlin. Artistically speaking, Stock-Schmilinsky was at first influenced by Expressionism, working mainly in the medium of watercolour because it was most suited to her spontaneous approach to her work, that was inspired by fleeting impressions. In the 1950s the painter was preoccupied with Cubism, later addressing herself to Tachism - her work became increasingly abstract without, however, becoming entirely non-representational. The Hamburg artist's aeuvre is informed by a lifelong delight in aesthetic experimentation. She has also enriched the art of her native city with numerous works associated with architecture. [KR]In good condition. A few smaller spots with minor craquelé. In the area of the sky with two small, probably retouched, stains.

Gabriele Stock-Schmilinsky (1903 Hamburg - 1984 Hamburg). Kampen auf Sylt. 1939 Watercolour and pencil. Monogrammed and dated lower right. On Hahnemühle (with watermark). 48 x 63,3 cm (18,8 x 24,9 in), the full sheet. [KR]. Provenienz: From the estate of the artist. Good overall impression. All in all barely noticeably discoloured and with scattered soft brown spots. Margins minimally creased.
