    • Alexander (Alex) Stöcker, Untitled (aviation photography), 1924-36
      Dec. 01, 2023

Alexander (Alex) Stöcker, Untitled (aviation photography), 1924-36

      Est: €2,500 - €3,000

Each with photographer's stamp, 12 prints dated and with handwritten notes on the subject by the photographer or in an unknown hand in pencil, ink or felt tip pen, 10 prints with paper label thereon typewritten notes on the subject, on the verso. Along with his 'pupil' Hans Schaller, Alex Stöcker was one of the most important German photographers of aviation in the 1920s and 1930s. His enthusiasm for the subject of aviation technology went far beyond that of a commissioned photographer. Even as a schoolboy, he had developed model airplanes himself and participated in flying competitions with them. After the war, he pursued a career as a photojournalist, using only plate cameras for his press photographs, which was atypical for the time. The present photographs are contact prints, which show both the aircraft with its technical details and the special atmosphere at the air shows from the visitor's perspective. They document various international events in the Berlin area and on the Wasserkuppe in the Rhön, where gliding competitions were held annually between 1920 and 1939.

    • Stöcker, Alex: Ernst Udet flying his Curtiss plane

Stöcker, Alex: Ernst Udet flying his Curtiss plane

      Est: €600 - €900

Ernst Udet flying his American Curtis plane. Circa 1936/38. Vintage ferrotyped gelatin silver print. 18,3 x 24 cm. 2 reproduction limitation stamps, photographer's stamp and typed press text label affixed to the verso. Ernst Udet (1896 - 1941) was a German fighter ace during World War I. Udet's postwar career was initially as a stunt pilot and in movies before working to recreate the Luftwaffe that played such a key role during World War II. He was appointed Colonel in 1936. Göring eventually appointed Udet Director General of Equipment and then Head of the Office of Air Armament in February 1939. Udet's wartime success came to an abrupt end, however, in 1941. Accused by General Erhard Milch of bringing about the Luftwaffe's shortcomings as demonstrated during the Battle of Britain, and under fire from Göring himself, Udet committed suicide. Carl Zuckmeyer's play Des Teufels General (The Devil's General) was based on Udet's life. In the image offered here, Alex Stöcker combines his talent for capturing movement and a strong composition in one dramatic image. - A few light crease marks, otherwise in very good condition. Provenance: The Estate of the Photographer.
