Marcus Stone 1840 London - 1921 London - "Ungewiss" - Öl/Lwd. 71 x 41,4 cm. Sign. l. u.: Marcus Stone. Betit und dat. r. u.: Ungewiss 1903. Rahmen. Zwei Rest. - Lit.: Th.-B. XXXII, S. 111. - Ausst.-Kat. Tate Gallery London, "Pre-Raphaelites" 1984, Vgl.-Abb. S. 137, 171. Marcus Stone war Maler und Illustrator, befreundet mit Thackeray und Charles Dickens. 1877 stellte er an der Royal Academie aus und wurde 1887 Vollmitglied. Bilder von ihm hängen u.a. in Glasgow, in Liverpool ("My Lady is a widow and childless") sowie in der Tate Gallery London.

**First Time At Auction** England, Marcus Stone (English, 1840-1921), "Two's Company, Three's None", ca. 1892 CE. A sepia print from an oil on canvas by Marcus Stone, illustrator for Dickens and Trollope, depicting a pair of young lovers in a garden setting, seated on wooden chairs before a large stone pedestal surrounded by flowering plants with an urn above. The gentleman wears late 18th to early 19th century Victorian dress with breeches, a tailcoat, bicorn hat, cravat, and gloves. Seated sideways, the lady in white crosses her legs, rests her feet upon a low stool and turns her head away from her suitor to face the viewer. She holds a fan in on hand and hangs the other over the back of her chair. A basket of apples, symbolizing fertility, sits on the ground behind her. Meanwhile another young lady, to the left background, stands alone with a basket dripping with flowers (also suggesting fruitfulness) beside a tree and turns to gaze upon the couple. A Victorian romantic saga in custom frame! Size: 11.125" L x 19.5" W (28.3 cm x 49.5 cm); framed 19.875" L x 28.625" W (50.5 cm x 72.7 cm) Provenance: Ex-Faires Collection All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
