Oil on canvas, relined Netherlands, 18th Century Circle of Jan Baptist van der Straeten (1670-1729) - Flemish artist Charming capriccio of a palace architecture with courtiers Partly gilt ornament frame Dimensions: 67 x 84 cm Provenance: Private collection, Germany Palace architecture with elegant figures are a frequently recurring theme in the oeuvre of Jan Baptist van der Straeten. The present painting is close to the works of van der Straeten and was therefore most likely painted by an artist of his circle Object is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU. The present painting is most probably the work of an artist active in the circle of Jan Baptist van der Straeten (1670-1729). It depicts a Renaissance palace on the left, while several elegantly dressed figures of a courtly society, accompanied by guards and dogs, stroll in the foreground. The right background shows a vista on a garden with waters lined with foliage trees and cypresses. The architectural capriccio is particularly striking for the wealth of presented details in the architecture. The painting is presented in a beautiful, partly gilt ornament frame. The canvas has been relined. The paint surface shows little paint losses in places, mainly to the edges. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of minor retouching to the figures and the palace. The sky shows some major areas of retouching. The frame is slightly chipped. The overall dimensions, framed, are 81 x 99 cm. The stretcher measures 67 x 84 cm. Jan Baptist van der Straeten (1670-1729) Jan Baptist van der Straeten was born in Antwerp and started his artistic career in 1685/86. He was active as an architectural painter and worked for several workshops in Antwerp, especially for Balthasar van den Bossche (1681-1715). He primarily painted the architectural backgrounds of commissioned works. In 1713/14, van der Straeten received further artistic training with the miniature painter Joannes Libyn. Since modern research on Jan Baptist van der Straeten started only in 1925, some of his works have long been attributed to the painters Wilhelm von Ehrenberg (1637-1676) and Dirk van Delen (1605-1671). Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
