        Est: $80 - $120

PAINTINGS BY HENRY STRATER - 1979, Arizonia State University, 28 pages soft cover; illustrated, about 8 x 8 in. Henry Strater (1896-1987) American painter, and illustrator. He was a friend of Ernest Hemingway and other figures of the Lost Generation. He was known for his portraiture, figurative, and landscape drawings and paintings. Strater founded the Ogunquit Museum of American Art in Ogunquit, Maine in either 1952 or 1953. During 1917 and World War I, Strater enlisted in the French Red Cross and drove ambulances. In 1919 he returned to the United States to studied at the Art Students League of New York and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He also took some classes at Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. In the 1920s, Strater studied at the Acadamie de la Grande Chaumiare in the Montparnasse district of Paris, under Edouard Vuillard. While in Paris, Strater met Hemingway in a bar, where they had a brawl. Later they became friends and Strater painted two portraits of Hemingway in late 1922 while still in Paris. Ezra Pound had Strater illustrate part of the book, The Cantos. His friendship with Hemingway ended in 1935, over a Time magazine photo of Marlin fishing that incorrectly credited Hemingway with catching Strater's oversized fish. Hemingway did not correct the issue. He died at the age of 91 on December 21, 1987, in Palm Beach. He is buried at the First Parish Cemetery in York, Maine. Strater's work can be found in museums including the Chrysler Museum of Art, Harvard Art Museums, Art Institute of Chicago, Detroit Institute of Arts, and Princeton University Art Museum. Notable figures of the Lost Generation include F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Jean Rhys, Henry Strater, and Sylvia Beach. Provenance: from the Cape Neddick Strater home.

Henry Strater Maine, (1896 - 1987) Foothills Corral, 1949 print Signed and dated (1937) in the print. Printed by A. Jaffe (1949). Biography from the Archives of askART: A landscape and figure painter, Henry Strater created work that ranged from modernism to academic realism. Early in his career, he was much influenced by the French painter, Paul Cezanne, especially his pre-cubist style of geometric fracturing. His later work was academic figure painting. His painting was heavily influenced by his training in sculpture and the rich colors he admired in medieval stained glass windows. Strater was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and was the son of a wealthy snuff maker. He studied in Paris at the Academie Julian and the Academy Grande Chaumiere, with Edouard Vuillard; the Art Students League in New York; and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with Arthur Carles and Charles Grafly. In the 1930s, he and his wife spent six years in the Southwest to relieve her asthma, and he completed numerous Arizona desert landscapes, many along the Verde River. Upon discovering this area he wrote: "When finally I rounded a hairpin curve on the no guardrail road over the mountain from Prescott to Jerome, and saw Jerome with Clarkdale and the Verde Valley stretched out below, I drew a deep breath and thought, 'This is it.' " (Ballinger, 77) Settling in Ogunquit Maine, , which he had first visited in 1919, he maintained a studio there for fifty-five years and served as President of the local Art Association. He is credited with founding (in 1952) the Museum of Art of Ogunquit, and he served as Director of that museum. Of Strater at Ogunquit, it was written that he "became known locally more for his many philanthropic works than for his artistic achievements." (Tragard 60) He founded the Maine Tuna Club, which encouraged fishing from Perkins Cove at Ogunquit, and he often took people on big boat expeditions. He became a big financial supporter of the Ogunquit Public Library and the Hospital at nearby York. He amassed a large art collection, which he donated to the Ogunquit Museum Exhibition venues included the Whitney Studio Club, Boston Museum, Society of Independent Artists, Corcoran Gallery and the Pennsylvania Academy.

Bellows French Dictionary 1928, signed by Henry Strater. Soft cover, 4-3/4 x 7 in. This comes directly from the Henry Strater home in Cape Neddick, Maine. Henry Strater (1896-1987) American artist. Following the First World War, a "Lost Generation" of American artists came of age as expatriates in Europe. Prompted by favorable currency exchange rates and a growing disbelief in the American dream, the "Americans in Paris" moment had arrived and a rising Modernist movement influenced generations of artists and writers. Amid the historical milieu that included James Joyce, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, Pablo Picasso, and others, Ernest Hemingway and Henry Strater developed a friendship that revolved around a fervor for beauty, bold sport, and social activism. Together they embarked upon an artistic collaborative that signifies the lasting impact of an era. VG
