Philipp Jakob Straub (Wiesensteig 1706 - 1774 Graz), Life-Size Baroque Sculpture of a High Priest,

      Est: €30,000 - €50,000

      c. 1740, standing, his torso and arms turned to the side, the head with flowing beard slightly tilted, superbly carved limewood, hollowed out on the back, polychrome painted and gilt, height 182 cm, (MC) Phillip Jakob Straub was born in 1706 as the son of the sculptor Johann Georg Straub. Like his brothers Johann Baptist, Johann Georg and Joseph, he received his first training from his father. In 1730-33, he studied with Johann Christoph Mader at the Academy in Vienna and settled as a sculptor in Graz in 1733, where he died in 1774. He is regarded as one of the most important baroque sculptors in Styria. Phillip Jakob and his brother Johann Baptist Straub shared a similar style, which is particularly evident in the present sculpture's expressive face and flowing beard.
