Signed Dorothy Strauser Painting - Horse & Rider (1966)

        Est: $800 - $1,200

Dorothy Strauser (American, 1908-2005). Oil on board, 1966. Signed and dated at the lower right. A wonderful painting by self-taught folk artist Dorothy Strauser depicting four Native American men on horseback riding through a verdant landscape. The men wear colorful feathered headdresses and ride horses of various coats - two are chocolate brown with white spots; one is caramel brown with a creamy beige mane and tail; and the last is champagne beige with a white mane and tail. Strauser captured the liveliness of the scene as the horses and their riders gallop through picturesque surroundings. All is delineated in a vibrant color palette with Strauser's playful sensibility. A wonderful example from this important figure in the world of American Folk Art. Size (painting): 2.875" L x 18" W (7.3 cm x 45.7 cm) Size (frame): 3.5" L x 18.7" W (8.9 cm x 47.5 cm) Dorothy "Dot" Strauser had solo exhibitions at the Everhart and Burliuk Museums and also exhibited her art at Bertha Shafer and Frank Lee Galleries as well as the Museum of American Folk Art in New York City. A very accomplished self-taught artist, Dorothy Strauser's works were collected by respected private and corporate collections as well as famous artists including sculptor Louise Nevelson and painter Red Grooms. In addition to painting, Dorothy Strauser made hooked rug pictures from textiles that she collected and dyed. Furthermore, Dorothy Strauser and her husband, the self-taught artist Sterling Strauser, were important figures in the American folk art scene. They championed the works of folk and outsider artists such as Jack Savitsky, Victor Joseph Gatto, Ironside Pry, Charlie Dieter, Joseph Polinski, and Justin McCarthy - credited with the discovery and support of many of these self-taught artists. Honoring their contributions to folk art in America, Chuck and Jan Rosenak dedicated their Encyclopedia of Twentieth-Century American Folk Art and Artists to the Strausers in 1991. In their dedication, the Rosenaks stated, "They taught us to see, and that seeing could be fun." In addition, the Folk Art Society of America presented the couple with its Annual Award of Distinction in 1993 and Dorothy won CoTA's (Collaborations: Teachers and Artists) award for the visual arts in 2003. Signed Sterling Strauser Painting of Camel

Sterling Boyd Strauser (American, 1907-1995). Oil and ink on board, ca. 1960s. Signed at the upper left. A fabulous painting of a camel by self-taught folk artist Sterling Strauser who along with his wife Dorothy were known throughout the Pocono Mountains region of Pennsylvania as folk artists and promoters of folk and outsider art. Strauser delineated the endearing camel and its environs in a dreamy color palette of sky blue, petal pink, golden ochre, and chocolate brown hues - and boldly delineated the features of the animal's visage in black. Strauser's style captured a delightful playfulness with a fantastic folk art sensibility. A wonderful example from this important figure in the world of American Folk Art. Size: 36" L x 12" W (91.4 cm x 30.5 cm) Size of frame: 36.75" L x 12.75" W (93.3 cm x 32.4 cm) Sterling Strauser and his wife, the self-taught artist Dorothy Strauser, were important figures in the American folk art scene. In their dedication, the Rosenaks stated, "They taught us to see, and that seeing could be fun." In addition, the Folk Art Society of America presented the couple with its Annual Award of Distinction in 1993. Sterling Strauser's works have been exhibited at: the Lyzon Gallery, Nashville, Tennessee; the Reading Public Museum, Reading, Pennsylvania; and Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. David Burliuk, an accomplished artist and member of the Blaue Reiter group, spoke very highly of Sterling Strauser, "It is amazing to find a self-taught artist in a quaint little provincial village painting like the masters in the great art centers of the world." Interestingly, Edward J. Driebe, a produce merchant of Stroudsburg where the Strausers resided, sent four of Strauser's paintings to the White House as gifts for the Kennedy family in 1961. These included "Trains" for the president; "Saucy Rooster" for Jacqueline; "The Giraffes" for Caroline, and "Newborn Palomino Colt" for John F.
