    John Suazo (b. 1951) - Taos Pueblo - Utah Green Alabaster Sculpture. John Suazo (Hunter Watching) is from Taos Pueblo and began sculpting in 1974 while a student at the University of New Mexico. He was inspired to carve by his uncle Ralph Suazo. He received his formal training at the Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe, NM, Bacone College Muskogee Oklahoma, Navajo Community College, and UNM, Albuquerque. Museum collections include Heard Museum, Millicent Rogers Museum, National Carvers Museum Colorado.

    Sculpture in pink alabaster. Artist signed on reverse. John Suazo is a Taos Pueblo stone sculptor. He works mostly in alabaster and limestone. John believes the purpose of his work is to bring joy and happiness to those who want to see and touch. His work is simple, yet very profound. They are of simplification can only be achieved when one has mastered the are of sculpting after years of study and work. This carving of Taos Pueblo singers with a Pueblo drum allows the PInk Alabaster to really speak for itself. There is one carving inclusion on the second from left figure's chin, a flaw created by John in the process

    John Suazo is a Native American sculptor from Taos Pueblo, New Mexico. His award winning sculptures are in collections around the world. This piece is a highly stylized portrait of five Pueblo singers with a drum made from Colorado Pink Alabaster, one of Suazo's favorite media. Each singer is individuated by their own decoration - a shield with bird decoration and feathers, a mountain scape, another bird with a river, a starburst with mountain, and another mountain scape. The drum is etched as are each figures' hair. It is signed on the rear "J. Suazo" and is mounted on a walnut base, also one of Suazo's favorite media. There are natural cracks in the stone throughout, but one of the upturned faces has a small inclusion on the chin.
