            2004 VOTING TRIPTYCH

            Est: R30,000 - R50,000

Mikhael Subotzky (South African 1981-) 2004 VOTING TRIPTYCH signed and dated 2004 digital print 21 by 57,5cm In 2004 Mikhael Subotzky exhibited Die Vier Hoeke: The Four Corners as his student graduation exhibition for his honours degree from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town. At the time, the artist was the only student ever to receive 100% for their final exhibition and was instantly snapped up by the Goodman Gallery. Unusually for such a young artist, Subotzky had already developed his modus operandi of immersing himself in a situation, learning as much as possible from those directly living the experience in question, and taking photographs from this position. Subotzky quickly became accepted as one of South Africa’s most renowned photographers, and has since exhibited internationally at some of the most respected art institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York. He was awarded the prestigious Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year award in 2012. During his final year at Michaelis, the artist spent three months visiting Pollsmoor Prison engaging with the prisoners and wardens, and teaching photography to the inmates while taking his own photographs. His images reflect a hopelessly overcrowded facility largely controlled by a system of local gangs. Subotzky’s images portray the humanity of the prisoners whilst highlighting their extremely harsh living conditions. The term Vier Hoeke is taken from gang terminology, which can apply to any prison, not necessarily Pollsmoor. It directly refers to the architectural space of the prison cell but also to a place where gang rules apply over the usual systems outside the prison walls, such as their local neighbourhoods. Subotzky referenced three texts in lieu of an artist’s explanation for Die Vier Hoeke: a quote about prisons from Nelson Mandela, an extract from Michel Foucault’s book Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison, as well as the following quote by Chief Justice Chaskalson during a Constitutional Court case. A quote which ultimately reaffirmed the rights of prisoners to vote in South Africa: “In the light of our history where denial of the right to vote was used to entrench white supremacy and to marginalize the great majority of the people of our country, it is for us a precious right which must be vigilantly respected and protected.” The quote directly states the importance of voting in South Africa. 2004 marked ten years since voting became ‘free and fair’ and available to all of its citizens, who did not have this right prior to 1994. Three of the subjects in Subotzky’s triptych hold the national and provincial voting sheets from the 2004 elections in front of them, the third subject holds an envelope, presumably in which the voting sheet will be encased. At the time the artist was working digitally, which allowed him to take a number of shots of a scene and digitally stitch them together to produce panoramic images. This is especially effective in the case of the prison interiors and represents the severe overcrowding of the cells. The photographs from Die Vier Hoeke exhibition are easily recognizable by this format, although only some of his photos took this panoramic format, as well as the bright orange with circular black writing fabric that easily distinguished the inmates’ uniforms. In this triptych, the photograph takes a similar elongated rectangular form to the panoramic shots, although they consist of three distinct photos from very different locations, and are not digitally stitched together. One of the photographs contains an inmate, obvious from the uniform, and distinguished from the other subjects by his facial tattoos. The subject matter, as well as the date, 2004, suggest that the photo was taken while the artist was shooting and preparing for his final student exhibition. The triptych also depicts a man who appears to be too ill to attend the voting station. An image of a younger man also appears in the frame, perhaps a photograph of his younger self? The third photo that makes up the triptych depicts a white, middle-aged couple who, unlike the other two subjects, would have been allowed the privilege to vote previously. A young man, incarcerated; an older, ill man, possibly on his death bed, possibly blind and voting in brail; a middle-aged white couple, this triptych acts as both a three-way juxtaposition denoting three different life experiences, yet all three are linked by their citizen’s right to vote, and the hope that their vote will bring about their desired political leaders. Through his subject matter linking directly to his chosen quote by Chief Justice Chaskalson, the artist is emphasizing the importance of voting for the citizens of South Africa. While Subotzky produces very small editions of his photographs, this particular work is a one off. Obscured in a broken frame, it was fortuitously rescued from a pile of rubbish by someone who recognized the content and style. It has since been authenticated by the artist. Although it was made during the same year as Subotzky’s work for Die Vier Hoeke exhibition, it was not included in the show, and was never exhibited. For these reasons, it is a very precious photograph and we are delighted to include it on our auction. http://www.subotzkystudio.com/works/die-vier-hoeke-text/ https://artthrob.co.za/07aug/artbio.html
