Khoo Sui Hoe (b. 1939) The Greetings, 1981

          Est: RM30,000 - RM45,000

A couple emerging from a pool of water dominates the scene in solitary bliss. The lady, wearing a cape with open palms signals an inviting greeting and receptive expression. Using a warm sumptuous palette of orange, green and blue, his works illustrate a romantic and peaceful surrounding environment. His choice of palette is greatly influenced by the colours found present in nature. This piece is characteristic of Khoo Sui Hoe's poetic vision, infusing symbolic elements to evoke nostalgic memories of childhood and the countryside. His distinct aesthetic often employs sculptural figures rendered in forms with artistic sensitivity to detail. Khoo Sui Hoe is the spiritual leader of the Utara Group, formed in 1977. He was a fulltime artist since graduating from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore, in 1961. He was awarded the John D Rockefeller III Fund to study at the Pratt Graphic Centre in New York in 1974. He was accorded a Retrospective, The Painted World of Khoo Sui Hoe, by the Penang State Art Gallery in 2007, and later another by Wisma Kebudayaan Soka Gakkai, Kuala Lumpur. There were mini retros of sorts, given by the Penang Museum Board, in 1978 (works from 1963-1973) and The Art Gallery Penang in 2013 (works from 1967-2013). In 2015, Khoo held a two-part An Overview exhibition, in Singapore. He won Honorable Mention in the prestigious Salon Malaysia in 1969 and also 1st Prize (Oil) in the Malaysian Art & Craft competition in 1965. He was in charge of the Alpha Gallery Singapore in 1972, which he revived in Penang in 2004 as the Alpha Utara Gallery. There is something liberating about taking a dip alone in the sea, or river, in the buff, apart from being foolhardy as it is not safe for girls. The girl is probably a tom-boy, with short close-cropped hair, although the angular exaggeration of her hair makes it look like some kind of Egyptian headgear, and thus a bit of exotica. Everything about her is calm, including the water's surface, while the sky backdrop is clear though darkened, probably in the early evening. With her eyes and luscious lips, the girl looks innocent and nubile. Despite being outdoor alone, the girl is wrapped in her own 'safe space'. Khoo Sui Hoe's high point in his art career when he was honoured with a Retrospective, The Painted World of Khoo Sui Hoe, by the Penang State Art Gallery in 2007. He had another Retrospective accorded by Soka Gakkai, Kuala Lumpur. He was also given a mini-retrospective (1963-2013) by The Art Gallery in 2013. Khoo studied at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore, graduating in 1961. In 1974, he studied at the Pratt Graphic Centre, on a John D Rockefeller III Fund award. Mar. 27, 2022

Khoo Sui Hoe (b. Kedah, 1939) Two Sleeping Bathers, 1981

          Est: RM30,000 - RM40,000

A pair of male and female figures — portrayed in Khoo Sui Hoe’s stylistic dreamy manner floating against orange and yellow ochre waters — an oval shape reminiscent of a rock seen at a distance dominates the backdrop. An early piece dated 1981, Two Sleeping Bathers is a highly emotive work imbued with mysterious qualities portraying his profound interest in primitivism — illustrated in a surreal manner. His simplistic rendition of “archaic and primitivistic figurations” is treated with great consciousness. Khoo won many admirers when he boldly and immediately went full time into art in 1961 after completing his studies at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore. In 1974, he was awarded the John D. Rockefeller III Fund grant to study at the Pratt Graphic Centre in New York. Khoo is a rare artist with a Retrospective and two mini-Retrospectives. The Penang State Art Gallery honoured him with a Retrospective, The Painted World Of Khoo Sui Hoe, in 2007. His minis are at The Art Gallery Penang, in 2013, of works from 1967 to 2013; and at Wisma Kebudayaan Soka Gakkai, in August 2017, apart from two other major exhibitions at HELP Institute in 1992 and Datuk Seri Lim’s Bellevue Hotel in Penang Hill in 2000. The Penang Museum Board had in 1978 already given Khoo a solo, of his works from 1963 to 1973. He was also given a two-part An Overview exhibition, the second at the Private Museum, Singapore. Recent Paintings at the prestigious Shanghai Art Museum in July 5-14 adds to his stature. Khoo won Honourable Mention in the prestigious Salon Malaysia in 1969 and also 1st Prize (Oil) in the Malaysian Art & Craft competition in 1965. Khoo is the spiritual leader of the Utara Group, formed in 1977. Est: RM26,000 - RM42,000

Khoo Sui Hoe’s maskscapes are imbued with a sense of contemplative peace, positioned within a window frame extending memories beyond the structure. Bordering between figuration and abstraction, his portraits contain a spiritual element, which acts as a reflection on the human mind and spirit. Brightly coloured borders of red, blue, green, yellow, orange, purple, brown contrasts with the dark center, altering the depth of the space. Khoo Sui Hoe (b. Kedah, 1939) Three Fly Home, 2014

          Est: RM68,000 - RM88,000

Three's a crowd in Khoo Sui Hoe’s painted repertoire, dominated mostly by two evocative figures or one in solitary bliss or careless abandon. The figures are often depicted Chagall-like, in levitation since the 1970s exuding a freedom and nary-a-care attitude, often in natural settings, whether it be among the clouds, in a lake or amidst some vegetation. Love and togetherness are the perennial driving force, often with a touch of humour for a cutesy feel-good affinity. Time just stands still, there is no urgency for anything at all but to luxuriate in the eternity of the moment. There are so few works that go beyond the figure ‘2’ that they can be easily marked, like Three Flying (2006) and some others with four or five or even figures, but they are few and far in between. No wonder, Sui Hoe is dubbed by the pioneer Malaysian art promoter Frank Sullivan as a “poet in paint.” Khoo Sui Hoe is the spiritual leader of the Utara Group, formed in 1977. He was a fulltime artist since graduating from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore, in 1961. Khoo Sui Hoe (b. Kedah, 1939) Posing By The Beach, 1977

          Est: RM30,000 - RM50,000

Gravity-defying feats are performed with the mind in a state of blissful ecstasy in solitude amidst the salubrious surroundings of Nature. Curvilinear blobs help soothe a transition to tranquillity while a sinuosity suggests smooth movements. When in this exalted state, there is a weightlessness about as the mind soars unfettered, to achieving a new equilibrium. Even the clouds, creamy yellow and like puff balls, assume curvaceous body. Such dreamy seances from the pale lime green of the figures, male and female, floating as if levitated, eyes closed seemingly disparate, yet bound by the intimacy of telepathy. The surreal landscapes of the mind is like no other landscapes known to man. This work was painted in Penang, where Khoo Sui Hoe had his first solo at the British Council in 1965, and where he had set up temporary base since 2004, in between his time in Jacksonville in the United States. Khoo Sui Hoe is the spiritual leader of the Utara Group, formed in 1977. He was a fulltime artist since graduating from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore, in 1961. Est: RM30,000 - RM45,000

Khoo Sui Hoe’s works contain symbolic configurations that correspond to the dreamlike, unconscious state of mind. Highly emotive, his works are imbued with mysterious qualities portraying his profound interest in primitivism illustrated in a surreal manner. His minimal use of colour palette — white, grey, olive green and brown — achieves a soothing experience. Khoo Sui Hoe (b. Kedah, 1939) The Colourful Sky, 2008

          Est: RM37,000 - RM55,000

The Colourful Sky is a celebration of love and affection. It depicts a couple soaring above a house, feeling on top of the world as they rise into the air. The sky is vividly painted in brightly coloured hues, while the figures and house are painted in a calming blue colour. The artist blends symbolic and dream like elements with attention to detail, through a powerful use of colour and composition. Love is in the air! Khoo Sui Hoe (b. Kedah, 1939) Match Maker, 1995

          Est: RM16,000 - RM28,000

Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match Find me a find, catch me a catch The familiar refrain from the Matchmaker song in the 1971 film adaptation, Fiddler On The Roof, would have conjured different faces of Yenta the wizened matchmaker, according to ethnicities and cultures. Matchmaking in its traditional forms, xiangqin in Chinese, and the tukang risik in Malay, is passe, of course, but the digital revolution has provided singles with opportunities from dating agencies, including the more creative ‘Lunch Actually’. For the artist Khoo Sui Hoe, his stereotyped matchmaker is one with a deadpan face, rouged cheeks and rosy lips but one can sense her years. Perhaps, traditional matchmaking was practiced in the generation of his parents, but as a youth, he had struck out on his own from then agrarian Kedah to Penang and Singapore and eventually, the United States.

Khoo Sui Hoe’s highly emotive works suggest a dreamlike atmosphere revealing his profound interest in primitivism, illustrated in a surreal manner. The serene blue of the nocturnal landscape is the dominant tone of this work. A moon illuminates the figure, resulting in contrasting shadows and a glimmering effect on the water. His minimal use of colour palette executed in blue, ochre and yellow achieves a radiant and calm moonlit night. Three figures flying over the moon with a dreamy bluish tint, timeless, and with all three the faces with eyes wide open towards viewer. The floating forms recall Marc Chagall, but for Sui Hoe it is a flight of fancy and an exhilarating sense of freedom. They seem to be in search of something in the boundless yonder. What? That’s not important, just floating and floating like an errant dirigible but in slow-mo. Khoo Sui Hoe has dwelled on such theme since his Cameron Flying Series from June 1979. He is the perennial professional artist since he graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Art in Singapore in 1961 - arguably the longest record in Malaysia and Singapore. After Nanyang Academy of Fine Art, Singapore, Khoo Sui Hoe studied at the Pratt Graphic Centre under the John D. Rockefeller III Fund award. Khoo Sui Hoe (b. 1939) Hide Before Crossing, 1967-1999

          Est: RM30,000 - RM55,000

There was a lapse of three decades before Khoo Sui Hoe was able to complete this work to his satisfaction. It was during the 1960s that artists resorted to painting in oil on masonite board because it was relatively cheaper. But the taste and sensitivities betray a later time of improved coloration, a matured approach and more simplified figure types. It could be that Sui Hoe was dealing with small children again. A childlike humour exudes in the little children huddled together furtively among some shrubs waiting for some danger to pass over or in fear of some bugbear perhaps a ‘Boo Radley’, of To Kill A Mockingbird fame or a wild animal lurking within sight. There is a similar piece, Night Crossing (1999) from the same setting, but with the addition of two female figures. Khoo Sui Hoe is a hero of sorts, being the first to embrace art as a ‘professional’, something unheard of in the 1960s. After graduating from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Art in Singapore in 1961, he won first prize (Oil category) in the Malayan Art & Craft competition in 1965 and won Honorable Mention in the 1st Salon Malaysia in 1969. He received the John D. Rockefeller III Award to study at the Pratt Graphic Centre in New York in 1974. 60 x 80cm

This piece features two women, laying on their backs side-by- side, the pale blue sky peeking in from the windows. Judging from the eyes of these ladies, they seem to be in a restful mood, enjoying each other’s presence. It’s a bliss to be able to lay back and relax.Khoo won many admirers when he boldly and immediately went full time into art in 1961 after completing his studies at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Art in Singapore. Khoo Sui Hoe’s works are filled with imaginary figures, based on his own thoughts and experiences of life through his symbolic and richly imaginative worlds. In Image Hiding, two indigenous figures are seen prominently emerging from shrubbery in a tropical setting, pulsating with energy and life. Est: RM30,000 - RM45,000

Two heads are better than one, but this head (baby face) stacked above another head called Coo-Coo On Top (1977) is just Khoo Sui-hoe’s playful lark amidst Nature, with glimpses of a land far far away and the changing light of the sky. A segment of an otherwise perfect spherical moon sits on the top edge of the canvas like a hung chandelier. This head-on-top-of-head, sometimes overlapping, is one of the favourite imageries of Sui-hoe since the 1960s. The bottom head is shown partly submerged in water or with the water’s edge at neck or half-body level. Isolated by itself, it suggests a nocturnal play-time of a water nymph and her young offspring. A 1978 work from the same series, there is a self-explanatory Flying Coo-Coo (1973), so it’s not able head stackings. Coo Coo Riverside, sold for HK$125,000 (RM59,374) at Christie’s Hong Kong in May 2015. Sui-hoe’s record was set at the Henry Butcher November 2013 auction, with a premium of RM93,500. During this period, Sui-hoe was flitting between Cameron Highlands and his artist’s residency in art-collector / architect Datuk Seri Lim Chong Keat’s Macalister Road mansion, from 1975-1981.Khoo Sui-hoe won many admirers when he boldly and immediately went full time into art in 1961 after completing his studies at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Art in Singapore.
