MOHD YUSRI SULAIMAN : Young Hunter (Grace), 2005

        Est: RM5,500 - RM10,000

The work of Yusri Sulaiman is a self-reflection; he expresses his thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and motivations through the medium of acrylic. His works act as a metaphor for his life; from childhood to adulthood, he is inspired by himself as a shy boy, rebellious youth and finally a confident family man. Illustrated here is a young cub, which feeds into the apt title, ‘Young Hunter (Grace), 2005, symbolising the journey of life and the cubs introduction to hunting, echoing the artist’s subconscious intentions and ambitions of his life.

        YUSRI SULAIMAN (b. 1977) Saï, 2009

        Est: RM3,000 - RM5,000

A figure, faceless for the anonymity and the head deliberately obscured, sits slouched slightly back, one hand (right) visible and the other resting on an upraised surface. With basically only configurations, it is in keeping with Islamic aniconic strictures. The figure, presumably male, is wearing Ihram robes typical of one performing the umrah (small haj) in Mecca. In the Journey To The Land Of Heaven exhibition with the umrah theme, Yusri Sulaiman's work was shown with those of five others namely Khalil Ibrahim, Raja Azhar Idris, Jalaini Abu Hassan, Raduan Man and Shafee 'The Chief' Ramlee, at Art Case Galleries in Great Eastern Mall in Kuala Lumpur in September 2009. Rendered in his trademark fabric collage portraiture, the figure is in self-reflection mode, with the layering process of cut canvas a kind of life's ritual of ibadah (self-effacing worshipping) and also for aesthetic purposes. Writing in the Young Masters exhibition in February 2014, about six Master degree graduates, Dr Suzanne Standkard noted that â€aethe concept of collage, layer upon layer, has symbolic meaning for the layers of his (Yusri's) life; finding, keeping, selecting, altering, rearranging and patching fabrics to interpret his inner feelings to reflect himself through his artworks.” Yusri Sulaiman graduated with a Diploma from the Mara Institute of Technology in 1999. He won 1st Prize in the Maybank Expressions of the Malayan Tiger exhibition in 2010. Apart from fabrics, Yusri had also used aerosol spray, polyvinyl chloride glue, nylon and graphite in his work.

Those piercing eyes — they look into your deepest thoughts, asking for an answer. The furrowed brows don’t help matters either. The image will linger long in your mind. Once you catch this figure staring at you, you can’t help but be introspective — not to condemn, but as a reminder, that there are always eyes watching, judging.Yusri Sulaiman graduated with a diploma from the Mara Institute of Technology in 1999. He held his Jungle solo at Wei-Ling Gallery detailing the plight of the indigenous Orang Asli children. He won 1st Prize in Maybank’s Expressions Of The Malayan Tiger exhibition in 2010 and Honorable mention in the Malaysian Asean Art Award in 1997. He has participated in shows held at Taksu, Segaris Art Centre, G13 Gallery, etc.

      • YUSRI SULAIMAN (b. 1977) KEMELUT MUARA 9(A), 2002, Mixed media on canvas
        Nov. 12, 2017

YUSRI SULAIMAN (b. 1977) KEMELUT MUARA 9(A), 2002, Mixed media on canvas

        Est: RM2,000 - RM3,500

The literal translation of ‘Kemelut Muara’ is about an estuary that is at a critical stage. But what springs to mind and more fetching to the imagination is Ziana Zain’s song, Kemelut di Muara Kasih, about love’s sacrifices, from her album, Keunggulan. The metaphor of the estuaries as the ‘nurseries of the seas’ is where everything converges in a flooded river valley and the fresh water and sediments of the river make its way out into the salt waters of the ocean. Doubtfully, the artist Yusri Sulaiman, is driven by such lovey-dovey sentiments. It relates to an episodal experience at some crucial point of his life that saw him triumphal and this is a bitter-sweet memory of his recollection. You could virtually feel the ‘gelora’ (tension) in the dripping lines, the odd shapes knocking against one another, the splotchy lines in the central composition, but an oasis of calm subdued colours without, on top and below. Apart from an exhibition at the now defunct XOAS Gallery, Yusri Sulaiman held his “Jungle” solo at Wei-Ling Gallery detailing the plight of the indigenous Orang Asli children. He won 1st Prize in Maybank’s Expressions of the Malayan Tiger exhibition in 2010 and Honorable mention in the Malaysian Asean Art Award in 1997. Yusri graduated with a diploma from the Mara Institute of Technology in 1999.

      • YUSRI SULAIMAN (b. 1977) LAST WORD, 2012, Collage and acrylic on canvas
        Apr. 23, 2017

YUSRI SULAIMAN (b. 1977) LAST WORD, 2012, Collage and acrylic on canvas

        Est: RM1,200 - RM1,800

It is not uncommon to use an image of a face covered from the eyes down to suggest ‘omerta’ or the snuffing of free speech. With the title, Last Word, the viewer is curious to zero in on the identity or the circumstances. Is this somebody in the news recently, and are the cursive handwritten script shed any clue to person or event, or is it just something random? Just like the collage in the works, Yusri Sulaiman builds up the layers to camouflage as well as for aesthetic purpose. It could just be a metaphor of self-reflection known onlyto the artist himself or it could be just a ‘portrait’ exercise with a mischievous added value. Dr Suzanne Standkard wrote: “The work of Yusri Sulaiman is a self-reflection; he expresses his thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and motivations through the medium of fabric collage portraiture… The concept of collage, layer upon layer, has symbolic meaning for the layers of his life; finding, keeping, selecting, altering, rearranging and patching fabrics to interpret his inner feelings to reflect himself through his artworks.” Gallery hoppers would remember Yusri, from his odd paintings at the XOAS Gallery and his “Jungle” solo at Wei-Ling Gallery, how Yusri brought up the plight of the indigenous Orang Asli, especially the children onto his canvases for public focus. At the Henry Butcher April 2013 auction, his aboriginal child portrait, Kalee (2015) sold for RM4,950. He has since moved on to other subjects and mixed media using discarded domestic fabric, aerosol spray, polyvinyl chloride glue, nylon cords and graphite on canvas.
