[American Revolution]. John Sullivan Autograph Document Signed ("Jno Sullivan M. Genl").  One page, 7.625" x 2.5", no place; August 14, 1777. War-dated pass permitting travel through the lines for one Morris Hetfield. Sullivan writes, in full: " The Bearer Mr. Morris Hetfield is hereby permitted to pass into New York on his own personal Business." Signed, " Jno Sullivan M. Genl."  John Sullivan (1740-1795), born in New Hampshire, served as a general in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and participated in several significant engagements such as the battles of Long Island, Trenton and Princeton, Brandywine, Rhode Island and the now-infamous Sullivan Expedition. In 1778, Sullivan was transferred to Rhode Island where he commanded militia and Continental troops and where he signed this order. After the Sullivan Expedition in 1779, he resigned from military service due to poor health. He was a delegate to the Continental Congress for New Hampshire and served as the third governor of that state from 1786 to 1788 and 1789 to 1790. Sullivan was also a U.S. District judge for the District of New Hampshire from 1789 to 1795. The pass was penned by Sullivan just one month before the general lost to Cornwallis at the Battle of Brandywine. Condition: Backed with twentieth-century lined paper and reinforced along edges on verso. Sunned in uniform block. Wrinkled due to dried adhesive. Heavily toned and soiled. Rough edges.
