      LAWRENCE SULLY (IRELAND / VIRGINIA, 1769-1803) ATTRIBUTED MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF CHARLES HENRY SMITH (VIRGINIA, 1770-1841), watercolor, bust-length depiction of figure in partial profile, face turned toward the viewer, wearing high white stock and black coat, no signature located. Housed in likely original rose gold frame (not tested) with woven-hair memento visible in aperture to reverse. Circa 1795. 2 7/8" x 2 1/4" OA. Catalogue Note: Born in Ireland, Lawrence Sully (1769-1803) immigrated with his family to the United States in 1792, establishing himself in the nascent, growing city of Richmond. The elder brother of fellow portraitist, Thomas Sully, the two worked in Richmond and Norfolk through the end of the 18th century, until Lawrence was mortally wounded in a brawl in 1803. Thomas later married his brother's widow and provided for his children.

      LAWRENCE SULLY (firmly attributed to) (Irish-American, Richmond, VA, 1769-1804), oval painted portrait miniature of woman in white, circa 1775-1803. The portrait is set in a rose gold frame with a small suspension ring on the back. A memorial miniature of woven hair is in a domed glass inset on the back. Unsigned, though with all the recognizable characteristics of this well regarded miniature portrait painter, the older brother of Thomas Sully. Overall: 2-1/2''h, 2''w. Provenance: Gary E.       watercolor on ivory of an unidentified American junior officer in uniform, presented in likely original copper locket frame with bail, signed lower left and dated 1801. SS 2 3/8 x 1 13/16 in. Lawrence Sully, older brother of artist Thomas Sully, moved to Richmond, Virginia in 1792, where "he advertised in the Virginia Gazette as a 'Miniature Painter (and Student of the Royal Academy).'" His sitters were primarily from Norfolk and Petersburg, Virginia, and Philadelphia.
