              • PORTRAIT OF MAJOR GENERAL WINFIELD SCOTT BY THOMAS SULLY, C. 1817.
                Dec. 10, 2024

PORTRAIT OF MAJOR GENERAL WINFIELD SCOTT BY THOMAS SULLY, C. 1817.

                Est: $20,000 - $40,000

Thomas Sully (1783-1877). "Brevet Major General Winfield Scott, c. 1817." Oil on canvas, 43 1/4 x 33 1/4 inches, within custom, carved and gilded frame by Julius Lowey, c. 1950. Winfield Scott (1786-1866) attended William and Mary College briefly and studied law until obtaining a commission as captain in the Regiment of Light Artillery in 1808. With the onset of the War of 1812, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel, July 1812 and served on the Niagara frontier, where he was captured, paroled and later exchanged. He then participated in the taking of Fort George, where he was wounded, and at Uphold’s Creek; was promoted to brigadier general, March 1814 and as a brigade commander, was largely instrumental in American successes in the battles of Chippewa and Lundy’s Lane (where he was seriously wounded); for his valor, was brevetted major general on 25 July 1814. Due to the severity of his wounds, he remained on the East Coast on convalescence for the balance of the war. In 1815, he took a leave of absence to study French military systems, arriving after Waterloo. While there, he probably took the opportunity to have the full-dress uniform of a major general cut and embroidered for him (which he was entitled to wear with brevet rank), as Parisian embroiderers were considered the most skilled in Europe at the time; it is known that an embroidered swordbelt was also made for him in France at the same time. Returning to the United States in 1816, Scott was presented a sword from the state of New York, as originally approved by unanimous vote of its legislature in October 1814, recognizing his heroism and leadership during the Niagara campaign of that year. Its gilt-hilt was made by New York goldsmith John Targee and it was presented to him at New York's City Hall on Evacuation Day (25 NOV 1816). The sword, with its distinctive eagle pommel and downturned counterguard can be seen belted on his left hip in the Sully portrait. Thus, this portrait and also the William Rush bust of him showing him dressed in an identical uniform--both previously assigned a circa date of 1814 by art historians--were almost certainly done in 1817 or shortly thereafter. In March 1817, Scott married Maria DeHart Mayo, daughter of John Mayo, a wealthy engineer and businessman from Virginia and this portrait may have been a commission paid by his new father-in-law to welcome Scott into the family. In the background can be seen the Falls of the Niagara at night, with a flame-lit sky overhead--symbolizing the famous night battle at Lundy's Lane where Scott was gravely wounded yet earned his brevet commission and accolades from the American public. PROVENANCE: By descent in the Scott family; sold by his granddaughter in 1906; subsequently acquired by Jay Altmayer from Argosy Gallery some time prior to 1950. The work was restored and the impressive gilt composition frame made for it by Julius Lowey shortly thereafter. Sold as lot 87 in the Christie's Jay P. Altmayer Family Collection sale of 19 January 2017, whence acquired. CONDITION: Lined; the painting was recently conserved, during which inpainting from c. 1950 was removed, notably in the sitter's lower right waist area. The decision was made to not overpaint again and instead, to show what remains of the original artist's work "as found." The Lowey frame is in excellent condition, being recently cleaned, during which some small areas with losses to gesso or gilding were restored. This is not a standard shippable item and will require 3rd party shipping or pickup arrangements to be made. ADDENDUM: The frame is an early 19th century frame original to the portrait, but was restored by Julius Lowey in the 1950s and subsequently small portions of gilding and gesso damage or loss were restored by gilder Bernard Sellem, whose report accompanies the work.

                Nov. 15, 2024

19th c. American Portrait of Boy, Possibly Alfred Sully

                Est: $1,000 - $1,500

American, perhaps School of Thomas Sully (British-born American, 1783-1872). Portrait of a boy, possibly Alfred Sully, oil on board, 19th century. A charming bust-length portrait depicting a sweet, young boy gazing toward his right with bright blue eyes, rosy cheeks, and wavy blonde hair, donning a black cloak over a white collared shirt typical of the Victorian Era. The background is loosely painted in blue and mauve hues, and the painting is mounted in a custom gold-toned frame. Notes on cardboard backing the verso suggest that this may be a portrait of Thomas Sully's son Alfred Sully. Thomas Sully was a famous Philadelphian portrait painter known for his painterly, romantic style, and Alfred would grow up to become an accomplished U.S. Army military officer as well as an amateur painter. Size (sight view): 8.25" L x 8.125" W (21 cm x 20.6 cm) Size (frame): 13.875" L x 13.875" W (35.2 cm x 35.2 cm) More about Alfred Sully (1820-1879): Alfred Sully served during the Mexican-American War and the American Indian Wars. He was also Brevet Brigadier General in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Interestingly, he was removed from that position for his failure to stop a mutiny by the 34th New York Infantry Regiment, but was later cleared of any wrongdoing, and went on to have an illustrious military career. More about Thomas Sully (1783-1872): "Born 19 June 1783, Horncastle, Lincolnshire, England. 1792, emigrated with actor parents to Charleston, S.C. Studied art with schoolmate Charles Fraser; brother-in-law, Jean Belzons; and brother, Lawrence Sully, all miniature painters. He, too, began as a miniaturist. Until his brother's death in 1803, they painted together. 1805, married widowed sister-in-law. 1806, moved to New York. Patronage from acquaintances in theater. 1807, brief study with Gilbert Stuart, Boston. 1808, moved permanently to Philadelphia, where he soon became a leading portraitist. 1809, with funds from Philadelphia patrons, spent nine months in London studying under Thomas Lawrence. 1812, elected academician, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. After death of Charles Willson Peale, 1827, he was pre-eminent portrait painter of Philadelphia for remainder of life. 1837–38, London to paint portrait of Queen Victoria; major success. 1843, declined presidency of Pennsylvania Academy. Traveled frequently to other cities to execute portraits. His register of commissions lists over 2,600 paintings. Died 5 November 1872, Philadelphia." (Source: William Kloss Treasures from the National Museum of American Art (Washington, D.C. and London: National Museum of American Art with the Smithsonian Institution Press, 1985) "(Thomas) Sully was America's foremost exponent of the highly romanticized, painterly, and fluid style of portraiture practiced by the two contemporary British artists he had most admired during his year of study in England, Sir Henry Raeburn and Sir Thomas Lawrence. Although he painted many of the most prominent politicians, clergymen, and military heroes of his era, Sully's fame rests mainly on his exaggeratedly elegant and idealized portraits of fashionable society women, and, to a lesser extent, his sentimental group portraits of children and 'fancy pictures.' Often painted with a nearly flawless mastery of technique, these ultra-refined images are fundamentally decorative, and the deliberately self-conscious affectations of the sitters create a sense of artificiality that precludes the achievement of any penetrating psychological insight into their characters. This aesthetic, however, appealed greatly to the elite social stratum from which Sully drew his patrons, and earned him the status of being the most successful American portrait painter following the death of Gilbert Stuart in 1828, until his gradual decline in the 1850s. Sully died in Philadelphia in 1872." (National Gallery of Art website) Notes on verso read: "Thomas Sully (1783-1872)" "Thomas Sully (1783-1872), Am. School" "portrait of the Artist's son, Alfred?" Thomas Sully Portrait of George Frederick Cooke

                Est: $20,000 - $30,000

Title is Portrait of George Frederick Cooke as Richard III. Oil on Canvas. Original frame with documentation on the back, written by fellow Portrait Artist and Collector Albert Rosenthal. Letter states that the portrait was originally acquired by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from the artist. The note also states that the painting was made during George Frederick Cooke's American tour prior to his death in 1812. The other portrait of George Frederick Cooke which is still retained by the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts is considered to be Thomas Sully's masterpiece. 14 7/8" by 21 1/8" framed. Portrait could benefit from cleaning, and is currently in original, untouched condition. Thomas Sully (1783 - 1872) was active/lived in Pennsylvania / England. Thomas Sully is known for Portrait, historical, and landscape painting. A teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Thomas Sully became one of the foremost early 19th-century portrait painters, known for painting pretty faces on his subjects, often disregarding reality. He was the son of English actors and was born in Horncastle, Lincolnshire. He came to Philadelphia in 1792 when he was nine years old. Sully showed early drawing talent and first studied with his older brother, Lawrence, a miniature painter. To earn money, he tried unsuccessfully to have a career in insurance but then turned full time to painting and was able to be critiqued by Gilbert Stuart in Boston. He embraced Stuart's interest in classical styles, but favored pretty colors and opaque and glossy surfaces. Like Stuart, his subjects appear heroic and seem to have a sense of purpose. In 1801, he moved with Lawrence's family to Virginia, but Lawrence died, so Thomas cared for the family and married the widow two years later. In 1808, accepting an attractive offer from a patron, he moved to Philadelphia for the remainder of his life excepting the new two years when a syndicate of patrons sent him to England to paint and study. He returned with a copy of an Old Master painting for each patron. His twenty-three year old daughter, Blanch, accompanied him to England where he did a portrait of Queen Victoria, a commission filled from a request through the Philadelphia chapter of the Society of the Sons of Saint George. Blanch substituted for the Queen in many of the sittings, and even wore the British crown, the only American ever to have this distinction. She also modeled in Victoria's state robes. The Queen was extremely pleased with the portrait, which was finished in Philadelphia. In Philadelphia, Sully shared a studio with Charles Bird King, portrait painter, and taught at the Academy.
