It is doubly blessed to be blessed by a man in robes, in this case a Daoist monk, and especially within the propitious perfect circle where the ‘Om’ resonates within the circumference. The greeting, ‘Longevity’ and ‘Eternity,’ which amounts to the same unless you want to quibble over semantics, is mentioned as the beads mark the incremental blessings. Painter-calligrapher Professor Wan Wing Sum is dubbed the Lynx-Eyed Calligrapher. He is said to have “God’s Eye”. He was skilled in micro-calligraphy, cramming some 3,000 characters into a square-inch of space of square, on a tiny postage stamp – a feat he had honed since the age of 12. He created a sensation when 19 after his exhibition in Shanghai when he was considered to have mastered the Lingnan Style. He could do his micro-calligraphy on turtle shells, bones, bronze ceremonial bronze bells and vessels. China’s Ministry of Education awarded him the Gold Medal of the Arts. Born in Ngohan Hsien county in Quangdong province in China, he fled to Thailand and then Vietnam when war broke out, before settling in Hong Kong. Since 1938 when he held his first solo in Hong Kong, he had taken part in more than 100 exhibitions all over the world, including Malaysia. His demonstration of his micro-calligraphy was recorded on films by Warner Brothers when he visited Hollywood in the 1950s.

A commissioned work by the masterful calligrapher Wan Wing Sum, this set of four floral paintings contain pastel colours to display the European style of painting. Each painting includes the artist’s signature microscopic calligraphy barely visible to the naked eye on the attennae of the butterflies, grasshopper, and spider web. In the winter piece, the microscopic words inscribed on the wings of the bees is a poem by Tang dynasty poet Wang Wei, which reads: “You who have come from my old country, Tell me what has happened there ! -- Was the plum, when you passed my silken window, Opening its first cold blossom?” Popularly known as “The Lynx-Eyed Calligraphist”, Wan Wing Sum held his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong in 1938 followed by over 100 others internationally throughout his lifetime. Some of the countries he had exhibited in include China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Brunei, United States of America, Canada, Brazil, Turkey, Israel, Spain, The Netherlands and more. He was revered for his micro-calligraphy – a technique that involves inscribing no lesser than 3000 characters within a limited space of one square of an inch without any optical aid – which was developed since the age of 12. At age 19, he was acclaimed as the youngest genius in the Lingnan school of art by one of the leading newspaper in China after his exhibition in Shanghai in 1941. Wherever he went to present his masterpieces, his work was greatly admired by government officials and local dignitaries as well as the public. The production company Warner Brothers produced educational films and newsreels to record the artist’s remarkable achievements in Chinese calligraphy when he visited Hollywood in the 1950s. On offer here is a remarkable plum blossom with butterflies painting of the great calligrapher. The demeanour and character of the plum tree serves as a metaphor for inner beauty and humble display under adverse conditions. The plum blossom is a member of the “Three Friends of Winter” alongside the pine and the bamboo. Symbolizing nobility, it is also one of the “Four Gentlemen” in Chinese art (the others being orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum). Popularly known as “The Lynx-Eyed Calligraphist”, Wan Wing Sum held his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong in 1938 followed by over 100 others internationally throughout his lifetime.
