Robert Summers (Born 1940) "John Wayne, American Legend" Bronze Sculpture. Signed, dated and numbered 137/152. Inscribed on base with John Wayne's signature / Approved by Patrick Wayne, Michael Wayne. Stamped with Hoka Hey Fine Arts foundry seal. This sculpture depicts John Wayne as Stony Brooke, one of the Three Mesquiteers in the 1938 film Overland Stage Raiders. With the Oro Grande Mining Company stage being held up regularly, the Mesquiteers decide an airplane would be better so they get the ranchers to sell their cattle and invest in the new airline. But when a gold shipment goes out, the stage line owner has his men hijack the plane. The pilot discharges the gas causing a forced landing and the Mesquiteers must now find the missing plane and recover the gold. 6" long, 3 5/8" tall, 3 1/2" wide. Robert Summers (Born 1940) is active/lives in Texas. Robert Summers is known for Western narrative-views, sculptor. A resident of Glen Rose, Texas, Robert Summers is an oil painter and sculptor in realist style of contemporary western subjects, especially cattle ranching. He is the creator of numerous public art projects including the world's largest bronze for the Pioneer Plaza at the Dallas Convention Center. It has seventy longhorn steers and three horses and riders on a cattle drive. Completed in the mid 1990s, it took him two and a half years. As a child in Glen Rose, he took art lessons and was inspired by his father, a local judge and Frederic Remington buff. In his 20s, he worked with the Texas Highway Department and then with General Dynamic Aircraft, while working part time as an artist. Expressing desire to devote full time to his art career, he was supported for one year by a cousin, and by the late 1960s, he was achieving public success. In 1976, he was recognized as the official Texas Bicentennial Artist.
