  • ALVAR SUÑOL MUÑOZ-RAMOS (Montgat, Barcelona, 1935). Untitled. 1971. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner.
    Dec. 18, 2024

ALVAR SUÑOL MUÑOZ-RAMOS (Montgat, Barcelona, 1935). Untitled. 1971. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner.

    Est: €11,000 - €12,000

ALVAR SUÑOL MUÑOZ-RAMOS (Montgat, Barcelona, 1935). Untitled. 1971. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 147,5 x 297 cm; 150,5 x 300 cm (frame). In this composition, Alvar Suñol creates an ethereal atmosphere with his characteristic post-cubist style. The three women, with large eyes and rounded ovals, embody archetypes that, in this case, evoke hope and spirituality symbolized by the doves and the flower with enormous petals that they hold in their hands. The background with the city (synthesized with cubic forms suggesting building blocks) connects the intimate world of the house with urban modernity. Although he simplifies the forms in a cubist and fauve style, Alvar does not renounce beauty or the warm, vibrant colors that give the work a poetic tone. The colors are soft but luminous, creating a cozy and mysterious atmosphere that highlights the symbolism of the elements represented. The work can be read as a celebration of peace and beauty in the midst of everyday life. Alvar Suñol began oil painting at the age of twelve, and at seventeen he was accepted at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de Sant Jordi, in Barcelona. Before graduating, he held his first solo exhibition, which took place in 1957 at the Layetanas Galleries in Barcelona. Suñol also won the Alhambra Travel Grant in Granada, a summer scholarship that allowed him to further his education in the Andalusian city. At the age of eighteen he took part in the Premio de Pintura Joven de la Ciudad de Barcelona, winning first prize. He was also awarded in the annual exhibition of the French Institute held in Barcelona, obtaining a scholarship to study in Paris, where he settled in 1959. There he showed his work in the prestigious Drouant gallery and, after returning fleetingly to Barcelona in 1960, he remained in the French capital for ten years. In 1962 he showed his work for the first time in the United States, at the Monede Gallery in New York. The following year he produced his first series of original lithographs for the Drouant Gallery. That same year, 1963, Suñol held a decisive personal exhibition in Paris, the starting point of a successful international career that would take him to exhibit all over the world, in cities in Europe, the United States, Canada and Japan. Alvar's work, the name by which he is known in the art world, is based on geometry but is always figurative, and is inspired by classical architecture, with frequent references to his favorite painters: Piero della Francesca, Vermeer and Balthus. His work is also characterized by a deeply personal chromatic range, based on particular, sometimes exotic, ochers and reds. He is currently represented at the MACBA, the Kumamoto and Fukoka Museums in Japan, the Finch College in New York, the Art Museums of Wichita, Utah and Albany (USA), the Hyacinthe Rigaud Museum in Perpignan and the Museum of Contemporary Engraving in Marbella, among others.

Hand-numbered 13/275 in pencil bottom left. Hand-signed in pencil bottom right.  Overall Size: 31 x 39 in.  Sight Size: 36 x 28 in.  #7533 .  Àlvar Suñol Munoz-Ramos, known professionally simply as Alvar, was born January 29th, 1935 in Montgat, Spain, a Catalan fishing village on the Mediterranean coast near Barcelona. Between 1975 and 1990 his creative efforts were focused predominantly on lithographs, but in 2000 Alvar transitioned away from lithography and rededicated himself to painting in the form of large-scale murals and canvases, encompassing a range of subjects from ethereal figures to majestic interiors to biblical narratives. In 2001 he was commissioned to design a public mixed media mural of the four seasons for Tiana, a suburb of Barcelona. In 2003 he created a permanent public installation in the Plaza de Mallorquines, across from the train station, in his hometown of Montgat. In 2008 he made a sculpture of Catalan cellist Pablo Casals that stands in the Boulogne Billancourt area of Paris. Alvar works in a variety of mediums, including watercolor, oil, ceramics, engravings, sculpture, graphite drawings, and murals, and his works have been displayed in over 40 museums (both one-off exhibitions and permanent collections) and over 95 galleries and museums throughout the world. Hand-signed in pencil bottom right.  Overall Size: 31 3/4 x 37 3/4 in.  Sight Size: 28 1/4 x 34 in.  #7539 .  Àlvar Suñol Munoz-Ramos, known professionally simply as Alvar, was born January 29th, 1935 in Montgat, Spain, a Catalan fishing village on the Mediterranean coast near Barcelona. Alvar first began painting at the age of 12, and was accepted to the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Jorge in Barcelona when he was 17. A year later he won the Young Painter’s Prize in a competition sponsored by the city, and his painting was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona for its permanent collection. In 1957, he had his first solo exhibition in the Galleries Layetana, but left art for one year to serve in the Spanish Military. In 1959 Alvar won a scholarship to the Institut Francais in Paris, where he spent a year before meeting Juan Fuentes, the director of the Galerie Drouant. Fuentes sold Alvar’s first set of paintings in France in just a week, and Alvar readily signed a contract with the gallery. He brought his childhood sweetheart, Rosella Berenguer, to live with him in Paris, and they married in 1960. He studied further at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, and was invited to join the Spanish School of Paris, a group of the top young artists from Spain, organized by the Charpentier Gallery. Throughout the 1960s he showed with other prestigious Spanish artists including Miro, Dali, and Picasso. In 1962 the Monede Gallery in New York presented Alvar’s first solo exhibition in the United States. In 1963, Alvar produced his first original lithographs for a solo show at Galerie Drouant, which led to a flurry of prints created and exhibited regularly throughout the United States, Europe, Canada, and Japan. After spending ten years in Paris he and his wife returned to Spain, where he has lived and worked in his studio ever since. He is considered to be one of the last living great European Modernists.
