Note: Artist James Surls has been creating and exhibiting his work nationally and internationally for five decades, and he is one of the most widely celebrated sculptors of the American West. His works have a distinctive modernist style that combines metal and wood in dynamic fashion. Primarily based on natural forms, his pieces often consist of needles or branches radiating from a core element, as evidenced by "I Am in the House" offered here, and symbolizing growth to the artist. He is among the most acclaimed Texas artists of the late twentieth century and has found great success outside the state. Surls's sculptures are most inspired by nature, but also reveal metaphorical and mythological content. In a 2009 catalog for The Grace Museum in Abilene, Texas, Patterson Sims wrote that Surls's works are, "studies of myths, science, and human behavior." After graduating from Sam Houston State University and The Cranbrook Academy of Art, he taught at Southern Methodist University and later at the University of Houston and the Lawndale Art Center in Houston. Surls's work is held in many museum collections, and he has had numerous solo exhibitions, including ones at the Dallas Museum of Art in 1984 and The Meadows Museum in Dallas in 2003.

JAMES SURLS (American, b. 1943) Abstract Sculpture Wood and wrought iron 46 inches (116.8 cm) wide In this sculpture, James Surls has visualized an abstract interpretation of the Texas landscape. The flower-shaped windmill and curved branches rise out of a block of wood. The branches resemble both the scrubby trees of West Texas and the longhorns of the cattle which populate the landscape. Surls' sculptures have been shown at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
