5243 - 1890).

Bibliografia di riferimento: M. Chiarini, C. AFTER JUSTUS SUSTERMANS (FLEMISH, 1597-1681), PORTRAIT OF THE CROWN PRINCE OF DENMARK

    Est: $800 - $1,600

AFTER JUSTUS SUSTERMANS (FLEMISH, 1597-1681), PORTRAIT OF THE CROWN PRINCE OF DENMARK Late 19th century copy, oil on canvas, signed 'Justus Sustermans' lower left. Portrait of Danish Prince Waldemar Christian (1622-1656), son of King Christian IV (1577-1648), framed. The original painting by Sustermans is housed in the Palazzo Pitti. The plaque accompanying this portrait incorrectly lists the sitter as the son of King Frederick III (1609-1670), who was actually his half-brother and succeeded their father to the Danish throne. This lot is accompanied by a 1915 notarized letter describing provenance for the painting, and shipping insurance receipt from the same year. The letter, written by Louis H. Schulenberg of Chicago, states that he purchased the painting in a gallery liquidation auction in 1914. It was restored by a Joseph Pelligrino, 'former curator of an Italian Art Gallery', who at the time was living in New York. According to Schulenberg, the painting was purchased in Florence in 1889 by William Fisk Stone Jr., the son of an early Colorado Supreme Court justice. Schulenberg gifted the painting to his brother Fred on the occasion of his marriage in 1915, and it descended in his family to the current owner.

    Est: €200 - €300

Justus or Justus Sustermans (Antwerp 1597 - Florence 1681) workshop/follower of Portrait of Margherita de' Medici Oil on canvas 67 x 54,5 cm The painting is a counterpart to the portrait of Margherita de' Medici painted by Giusto Sustermans and housed in the Uffizi Museum in Florence. Margherita de' Medici married Odoardo Farnese in 1628 and at his death was given the regency of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza on behalf of her son Ranuccio II. From the dress she is wearing and the veil on her head, it can be deduced that she was a widow, so Sustermans painted the portrait, now in the Uffizi, after 1646, the year of her husband Odoardo Farnese's death.

Justus Sustermans, Portrait of a Bearded Man in a Pink Silk Sash

    Est: €30,000 - €40,000

Certificate Prof. Jan de Maere, Rambrouch, 27th May 2022. According to Jan de Maere, the present portrait of an unknown bearded man is an early work by the artist painted in Italy. The influence of Frans II Pourbus, with whom Sustermans spent three years in Paris (1616-19) before moving to Florence, is still noticeable. There is a close stylistic affinity with van Dyck's Genoese portraits. Sustermans worked with van Dyck in Florence in 1624. The painting can therefore probably be dated to around 1624/25, a date that also corresponds with the fashionable French clothing. The unknown man is probably an Italian nobleman of high rank, as indicated by the valuable pink silk sash. The Flemish painter Justus Sustermans is best known for his portraits of members of the Medici family, carried out when he was their court painter in Florence. Trained by Frans Pourbus the Younger, the Antwerp native combined Nordic and Italian stylistic elements in his portraits. During his lifetime, he was considered one of the best painters in Italy.

Portrait painting: School of Frans Pourbus II and attributed to Justus Sustermans.

    Est: €2,000 - €3,000

Portrait painting: Surroundings of Frans Pourbus II (Antwerp 1569 - Paris 1622) and attributed to Justus Sustermans (Antwerp 1597 - Florence 1681). Oil on canvas. Joost Sustermans was a Flemish Baroque painter who studied with Frans Pourbus the Younger and collaborated with him in his studio at the Faubourg Saint Germain in Paris in the period 1616-1619. In 1621, Giusto Sustermans became a portraitist in the service of the Medici and painted the Florentine aristocracy, princes and servants, clergy, soldiers, scholars and members of the largest Italian families. This portrait of an aristocrat in armor probably represents Charles II Van Mantua, Duke of Mantua and Monferrato and member of the Italian princely family of the House of Gonzaga. 115 x 90 cm. Attributed to JUSTUS SUSTERMANS (Antwerp 1597-1681 Florence) and workshop. "Portrait of Leopoldo di Cosimo II de' Medici (1617-1675) as a cardinal". Oil on canvas. Relined in the seventeenth century. It presents restorations. Measurements: 77 x 65 x 2 cm. This portrait is an adaptation of the full-length effigy of Leopold di Cosimo II de Medici painted by Sustermans around 1640, now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. There are two other versions of the painting, an octagonal one with the model holding a book, half-length, also in the Vienna museum, and a third one in the Stibbert Museum in Florence. In the latter Leopold of Cosimo holds a biretta. The painting in bidding depicts Leopold de Medici, son of Cosimo II de Medici and brother of Ferdinand II de Medici, as a cardinal. A patron of literature and collector of art, he was made a cardinal in 1667, although he did not take priestly orders until 1674. Justus Sustermans was a Flemish painter established in Italy during the Baroque period, specializing in court portraiture. He trained in Antwerp at the school of Willem de Vos (1609), nephew of the more famous Marten de Vos. After a stay in Paris (1616) in the studio of Frans Pourbus the Younger, he soon left for Florence (1620) to be placed under the patronage of the Medici, where he soon became the court painter of the grand dukes Cosimo II de Medici, Ferdinand II de Medici and Cosimo III de Medici. In Italy he was able to study the work of the great artists of his time such as Guercino, Diego Velázquez and Pierre Mignard. He was also influenced by the Venetian School. In addition to the Florentine family, he also painted Galileo Galieli, Ferdinand I Gonzaga and Catherine de Medici. In 1625 he went to Rome, in a trip that would be decisive for his formation as an artist. In the city of the Tiber he portrayed Pope Urban VIII according to the chronicler Filippo Baldinucci. He was able to observe the works of Titian preserved in the Ludovisi collection, copying them with great dedication. He was also able to admire the legacy of the Carracci family in the Farnese Gallery.

JUSTUS SUSTERMANS (ATTRIBUITO A) PORTRAIT OF ALESSANDRA BOCCHINERI

    Est: €10,000 - €12,000

Thanks to the inscription on the bottom "Alessandra Bocchineri Francesco Rasio Nvpta" the depicted is identified as Alessandra Bocchineri. Daughter of the Florentine poet Carlo Bocchineri and wife of the Florentine musician Francesco Rasi, musician of both the Medici court and that of Gonzaga. According to the long biography dedicated to Rasi by Warren Kirkendale, the wedding was celebrated on 4 September 1621 in Pistoia in the house of the bride's mother Polissena Gatteschi and the spouses left immediately after the wedding for Mantua. Since in our portrait Alessandra wears the widow's dress, the portrait can be dated after the death of Francesco Rasi, who died in Mantua on 30 November 1621. According to Kirkendale, the young widow found refuge with the Duchess of Mantua Caterina di Ferdinando de' Medici and, later in Vienna, with Empress Eleonora Gonzaga, where she married again to an Italian diplomat named Francesco Buonamici in 1623, a date which constitutes a useful ante quem term for dating this widow's portrait. Date the acquaintance between Caterina de' Medici and Justus Sustermans, who in 1621 was appointed court painter and the different affinities with works by the Master of Antwerp it seems reasonable to hypothesize that the portrait was painted in Mantua by Sustermans between December 1621 and 1623 before of the departure in Vienna. Within a golden frame.

Justus Sustermans 1597 Anversa-1681 Firenze Ritratto di dama, probabilmente Vittoria della Rovere

    Est: €6,000 - €8,000

(Antwerp 1597–1681 Florence) Portrait of Vittoria della Rovere (1622–1694), Grand Duchess of Tuscany, bust-length, oil on panel, 45 x 33 cm, framed Provenance: art market, Italy; where acquired by the present owner We are grateful to Lisa Goldenberg Stoppato for endorsing the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a photograph. The present portrait is a recent addition to the oeuvre of the Flemish painter Giusto Suttermans (Joos Soetermans), who trained with Willem de Vos in Antwerp and subsequently with Frans Pourbus the Younger in Paris. In 1620 Suttermans moved to Florence at the behest of the Medici, and from that time on, he was active as the portraitist of the reigning family and for other members of the Florentine court. The artist was especially devoted to Vittoria della Rovere, who is represented in the present portrait, and she commissioned numerous paintings from him to furnish her favourite residences, including the Villa del Poggio Imperiale. Vittoria della Rovere (1622–1694) was the last descendent of the dynasty of the Dukes of Urbino. In 1634 she married her cousin Ferdinando II de’ Medici, becoming the Grand Duchess of Tuscany. She is considered to have been a refined patron who was attentive to the arts with a deep knowledge of humanist culture. In 1654 she founded a literary academy for women in Siena and she also supported poets, musicians and scholars.

Justus Sustermans, Vittoria della Rovere, Grand Duchess of Tuscany (1622-1694), holding a Broken Pearl Necklace

    Est: €15,000 - €20,000

The beautiful Vittoria della Rovere, who was unhappily married to the Grand Duke Ferdinand II de´ Medici, was frequently depicted by the Flemish painter Justus Sustermans and his workshop as well as by Italian contemporaries. Sometimes the portraits show the Grand Duchess as a goddess of Greco-Roman mythology, provided with corresponding attributes, for example as Flora with a garland of flowers in her hands (cf. Dorotheum, Vienna, auctioned 17th October 2012, lot 515). The torn pearl necklace in our painting suggests a representation of Vittoria as St. Mary Magdalene. Her jewellery is thus to be interpreted as a vanitas motif, in the sense that the saint renounced all earthly wealth. A further, smaller version of the subject (68 x 52 cm) is also known, which may be a preliminary study for the present painting (see Galerie Fischer, Lucerne, auction 30th November - 4th December 1965, lot 2261).

CRISTOFANO ALLORI (Florencia, 1577 – Florencia, 1621). "Portrait of Cosimo II de Medici. Oil on canvas. Re-tinted. Attached export permit. Label with informative inscription on the back. Provenance: private collection conceived from the 70's between London and Madrid. Measurements: 217 x 136,5 cm. Unquestionable protagonist of his time, as his clothing faithfully reflects, characterised by the richness of the qualities and by the presence of the royal symbols such as the crown on which the arm rests or the details in gold, which are arranged on the armour. Standing facing the viewer against a background against which the drapery stands out, the work displays similar aesthetic patterns of the period, intended for the depiction of aristocratic figures. The quality of the glazing creates a detailed and truthful effigy, although slightly idealised in the pose and features of the protagonist, Cosimo II de' Medici (1590-1621) Grand Duke of Tuscany. The work is very similar to the portrait of Cosimo II painted by the workshop of Justus Sustermans between 1597-1681. Sustermans is best known for his portraits. He also painted a series of history and genre paintings, still lifes and animals. He rarely dated his works, which makes it difficult to establish a chronology. His works have been dated primarily on the basis of the apparent age of the models identified. His early portraits show the influence of his master Frans Pourbus the Younger, whose style of court portraiture was known for its emphasis on attention to precious detail as well as its hard modelling. Sustermans did not share the Flemish preference for concentrating on the details of the models' clothing and preferred a monumental simplicity of form. In Italy his style began to reflect contact with Florentine painters such as Cristofano Allori and Domenico Passignano. An example is the Portrait of Fra' Francesco dell'Antella (private collection, before the beginning of 1623). During his years in Vienna in 1623 and 1624 he painted in a more painterly style that was possibly influenced by the works of Hans von Aachen and Josef Heintz. Later his work became more Baroque, influenced by Flemish painters such as Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Cornelis de Vos. His mature style of the 1630s is characterised by his loose, expressive brushstrokes and lighter palette. From the mid-1640s onwards he returned to his earlier handling of surfaces, with marked contrasts between light and shade. One example is the full-length Portraits of Vittoria della Rovere with the young Cosimo III de Medici (Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Mansi, 1646). In the mid-1950s there was a decline in the quality of his output. The reason behind this may have been a greater dependence on his workshop, either because Sustermans travelled regularly or because of the imposition of the Grand Duke. In the 1660s and 1670s his brushwork became more restrained and he often set his figures against a dark background with quick, expert touches of highlights.

He then worked continuously for the Grand Dukes until his death 60 years later in 1681. Sustermans was particularly favoured by Cosimo III's mother, Vittoria della Rovere whom he painted on multiple occasions, including a large double portrait of Vittoria with her young son Cosimo, from which this portrait was based (Turin, Galleria Sabuada). Under the employment of the Medici, Sustermans ran a large studio to create official state portraits of the Grand Duke and Duchess and their family. This portrait, a particularly fine studio example, would almost certainly have been commissioned by the Grand Duke and gifted to an ally or relation. It has since been in the same private noble collection until recently.

JUSTUS SUSTERMANS (1597-1681), ATTRIBUTED TO: A PAIR OF PORTRAITS OF THE ARCHDUKES ALBERT AND ISABELLA, OIL ON CANVAS, 1ST HALF 17TH C.

    Est: €6,000 - €12,000

Dim.: 79 x 69 cm (the frame) Dim.: 61,5 x 52 cm (the work)  The rule of the Archdukes Albert & Isabella over the Low Countries began in 1598. Their highly cosmopolitan court became a flourishing centre of the arts, a showcase for other courts throughout Europe. The archdukes made a great contribution towards the radiation of the style later known as 'Flemish Baroque'. The century of Peter Paul Rubens would never have been the same without the support of Albert and Isabella. In the Habsburg Netherlands, a region split by civil war, the protestant Northern Provinces had broken away from Catholic Spain, while Spanish rule was established in the Southern Netherlands. The confidence between sovereign and subject would be restored by the Archdukes. The Twelve Year Truce (1609-1621) brought the necessary peace for a political, economic and in particular cultural revival. Albert and Isabella surrounded themselves with a score of artists, including the architects Wenzel Coebergher and Jacques Franckaert, the composer Peter Philips and the court painters, Peter Paul Rubens in the first place, but also Jan I Brueghel, Otto Van Veen and Theodoor van Loon. The South-Netherlandish humanists, Justus Lipsius in particular, brought about an intellectual apogee.
