    Oct. 01, 2023

Putu Sutawijaya (b. 1971) Antara Keras Dan Halus (Between The Hard And The Soft), 2007

    Est: RM2,000 - RM3,500

The human body is the key source of inspiration of Putu's works. His artworks mainly focus on rhythmic movements of the human body in dance and meditation, translating spiritual and emotional states. The body postures and gestures as reflected in Putu's works are expressions and methods in which he describes personal experiences and feelings. This work illustrates a figure seated cross legged in a meditative pose that evokes quiet contemplation. For any problems that arise, it can be solved through the hard approaches or the soft ways. The decision is up to one's discretion and wisdom. Putu Sutawijaya graduated in 1998 from the Art Faculty of Indonesia's Institute of Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta. He received the best Fine Art Award from ISI in 1995 and was cited as one of the Top 10 Best Artists in the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards Indonesia in 1999. In 2000, he received the Lempad Prize from Sanggar Dewata, Bali. He has actively participated in numerous exhibitions regionally and internationally since 1989, among others are Indonesian Artists at Chouinard Gallery Hong Kong (1999), Asia Contemporary in London (2000), Dermensch Als Mass at Der Kulturen Museum, Basel (2001). His solo shows were held at Gajah Gallery, Singapore (1999), Chouinard Gallery, Hong Kong (2000, 2002), Chouinard Gallery, Chicago (2003), Valentine Willie Fine Art, Kuala Lumpur (2006) and Sin Sin Fine Art, Hong Kong (2007). Putu Sutawijaya (b. 1971) Pemenang, 2002

    Est: RM90,000 - RM130,000

Think The Chariots of Fire, the 1981 British film about grit and honour in the 1924 Olympics. Though by no means so grand and dramatic, Putu Sutawijaya's painting is a paean to athletic triumph symbolising the eternal Olympic motto of Citius, Altius, Fortius (Faster (Swifter), Higher, Stronger). The athletes originally competed naked as a tribute to the god Zeus in ancient Greece as early as 776BC, but the nudity in Putu's work is about the freedom, a quest of immortality and one shorn of inhibitions with the display of the body physique of a veritable Adonis. The exhilaration of triumph is built on hours of self-sacrifices, practice and training, while honing flexibility and strength. Putu's athletic figures with unkempt long hair are arrayed in a clockwork circular motion, more like a Matisse-an dance. As Putu himself had intoned: "The body is the medium of suffering, pain, laughter and fear." The larger context is about LIFE itself, of course – the agony and the ecstasy. Bali-born Putu Sutawijaya is no stranger to Malaysia, his wife, Jenny, being from Malaysia. Putu himself had solos at the Valentine Willie Fine Art (VWFA) in 2006 (Body O) and 2007 (Poems of Nature), besides residency-workshop at VWFA / Patisatu Studio (2006) and VWFA / Gudang (2007). In 2000, he was awarded the coveted Lempad Prize by Sanggar Dewata Indonesia, was one of the Top 10 winners of the Indonesian Asean Art Award, and had a residency at the Museum of Cultures in Basel, Switzerland, in 2001. He had some 30 solos since his first, Energy, at Bendara Budaya Yogyakarta, in 1998. Apart from Indonesia, he has held solos in Singapore, Hong Kong, the United States (Chicago) and Beijing. He had also shown with Bayu Utomo Radjikin at the October Gallery in Yogyakarta (Teroris, 2001) and with Ahmad Zakii Anwar besides Ben Cabrera (Humanities) at Andrer Shire Gallery, Los Angeles, in 2009. He had also taken part in the Art Fair Turin, the Melbourne Art Festival, Art Paris, Art Stage Singapore and the Yogya Biennale. His exalted status in Indonesian art can be gleaned from the (Un)Real exhibition which also featured Affandi, Entang Wiharso and Nasirun at the National Gallery Jakarta in 2006. Putu graduated from the Indonesia Institute of Fine Art (ISI) in Yogyakarta in 1998.

    Feb. 20, 2022

PUTU SUTAWIJAYA : Beda Dalam Damai, 2003

    Est: RM26,000 - RM55,000

Putu Sutawijaya studied art at Indonesia Institute of Fine Art (ISI) Yogyakarta. He currently lives and works in Yogyakarta and Bali. As a painter, sculptor and performance artist, Putu embodies the multi-media, cross-disciplinary character of Indonesian contemporary art. At the same time, a main focus of his work is the human body as both an expressive form and a vessel of the spirit: as Putu says, ‘the body is the medium of suffering, pain, laughter and fear.’ The spontaneous energy of Putu’s paintings translates naturally into his sculptures. As the Indonesian critic Kris Budiman has pointed out, it is almost as though the figures in his paintings have ‘crossed over into three-dimensional space... to look for meaning in different contexts.’ Above all else, it is the gestural movement of Putu’s works that communicate an intense spectrum of spiritual and emotional states, from contemplation to sorrow to the pure exuberance of dance. Putu is also deeply drawn to sacred sites and often travels to the ancient temples scattered around Java and Bali, where he spends days painting.
