Stanhope Forbes had arrived by early 1884 and by September that year 'The Cornishman' newspaper noted that there were no less than twenty-seven artists residing in the tiny village of Newlyn. These included Frank Wright Bourdillon, Frank Bramley, Percy Craft, W.T. Blandford Fletcher, Elizabeth Forbes (nÚe Armstrong), Norman Garstin, Thomas Cooper Gotch , Frederick Hall, Harold Harvey, Albert Chevallier Tayler, Ralph Todd and Henry Scott Tuke. They became known as the Newlyn School (British Impressionism). Leghe Suthers exhibited twelve paintings at the Royal Academy between 1883 and 1905 and letters by Forbes and Bourdillon document and in some instances praise his work. The Royal Cornwall Museum own five paintings by Suthers and his work is included in notable public and private collections. Several of his paintings have also been published as fine art prints.
