James Augustus Suydam (1819 - 1865) Watercolor on Paper,Signed Lower Right, Measures (9.5 x 19.5 inches) w/frame (17 x 21 inches) Considered a second generation Hudson River School* painter and a follower of John Kensett, James Suydam, architect, lawyer and artist, is known for his peaceful, subtle, landscapes that give a poetic interpretation to nature in styles of Tonalism* and Luminism*. In many of his paintings, he explored aerial perspective and the effects of water meeting land as well as light on these subjects, especially mid-day when the sky was clear. Many of his works are low-horizoned panoramic views, but small in actual size. Some paintings had small figures, engaged in farm tasks.Suydam was born in New York City, and was a descendant from an old New York Dutch merchant family. He graduated from New York University and for ten years until 1854, was in business with his brother, John R. Suydam. From then he devoted himself to painting and was a student of portraitist Minor C. Kellogg. Together they traveled in Greece and Turkey.

A man of an extraordinary range of accomplishments, in his brief ten-year career as a painter, Suydam quickly won the respect of both critics and artistic colleagues for his modesty and intelligence. Following Suydam~dq~s early death in 1865, his friend Sanford Gifford wrote: Although [Suydam] was not lacking in full appreciation of what is splendid or imposing in nature, his peculiar sympathies led him to prefer the simpler and quieter phases, those phases which win our affection, rather than those which compel our admiration or wonder. We are grateful to Dr. Bruce Chambers for cataloguing this lot. Notes 1 Sanford R. Gifford, Manuscript Memoir of James A. Suydam, 1865, National Academy of Design, Biographical Files.
