      • MAX ŠVABINSKÝ 1873 - 1962 - WHITE CAMELLIA
        Dec. 04, 2024

        MAX ŠVABINSKÝ 1873 - 1962 - WHITE CAMELLIA

        Est: -

Max Švabinský elevated the Art Nouveau nude to a symbolist expression admiring the beauty and mystery of life. The interweaving of the symbols of the skate, flowers and the woman with plump shapes together represent this starting point and express Švabinsky's fascination with the most natural manifestations of life, which he wrapped in neoclassical symbols. The mythical woman in his prints is the bearer of a story and is often a manifestation of eroticism and desire. Framed under anti-reflective glass with UV filter. Technique: mezzotint, paper, Signed: sign. lower right: MŠvabinský

        Jun. 06, 2024

MAX ŠVABINSKÝ 1873 - 1962 - ABDUCTION, FROM THE CYCLE PARADISE SONATA

        Est: -

Sometime between 1916 and 1920, the idea of creating the Paradise Sonata was born in the mind of Max Švabinský. He dwelt in nature, which enchanted him, and found the embodiment of sensual intoxication in the female figure that appears in the form of "August Noon." In the Paradise Sonata, a woman appears to a lonely man, and the pair find love in each other. In a complex set of nudes he found an allegory of the human fate and the search for one's own counterpart. Set in a tropical paradise, it resonates with the artist's view of the wild unbridled fertility of nature, bursting with life. Framed under anti-reflective glass with UV filter. Technique: woodcut, paper, Signed: sign. lower right: M Švabinský

MAX ŠVABINSKÝ 1873 - 1962 - PORTRAIT OF PROFESSOR DRTINA

        Est: -

Leading Czech painter and printmaker Max Švabinský studied under Maximilián Pirner at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where he later led the special printmaking department. His oeuvre developed out of Symbolism and Impressionism, which also marked his sensory relationship to nature and the female figure. He was an excellent draftsman and engraver exhibiting exceptional technical skill and a strong sense for detail. Over the course of his career from 1897–1961 his graphic art underwent many creative transitions. He also earned acclaim as the creator of the “Czech hall of fame” portrait gallery, which features Czech literary classics, visual artists, scientists and politicians, but he also made portraits of international figures. Other areas of interest were landscape drawing and printmaking that built on Post-impressionism and featured a personal, luminescent milieu. Professor František Drtina was a philosopher, university professor, politician and one of the founders of Czech Scouting. As a respected expert, he intervened in public life and political struggles. He was a supporter of T. G. Masaryk and from 1907 to 1911 he represented the Czech People's Party formed by him in the Vienna Imperial Council. Czechoslovakia, ND (ca.1930-50's). 1000 (Korun?), P-Unlisted, Portrait of Frantisek Palacky on right with ornate border and title engravings. Signed on bottom and numbered 98/500. Printed on white paper with circle and star watermarks. Signed on bottom. After Alfonse Mucha, Max Švabinský is surely one of the greatest Czech artists of the 20th century. He was born on September 17, 1873 in Kroměříž, a small town in South Moravia. There he attended a German school, and then enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. From 1910 on, he was a professor of arts at various art schools. His art work primarily consists of drawings in pencil, charcoal and pen & ink, but he also produced a great deal of commercial graphic or applied art and book illustrations. From this large body of work, his stamp designs in particular stand out. Švabinský is especially known for his numerous portraits of famous persons, many of which can be seen on his stamps. Of his more than 70 stamp designs, more than two thirds are portraits. A look at a list of subjects depicted on Švabinský's stamps gives you the feeling that you are viewing a "Who's Who" of Czechoslovak history, art and science. Rare signed artists proof.
