Scattered losses of paint as well as light surface scuffs, such as along the upper edge. The canvas has been relined. Inspection under UV shows retouching to around 10-15% of the canvas, largely to corners. Scattered retouching to above the seated man, the sky and horses. N.B. All lots are sold in as-is condition at the time of sale. Through frequent stays on a horse breeding station, he specialized in the depiction of horses, especially parades or tsar portraits on horseback. In 1852, Sverchkov became a member of the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg and, in 1855, professor of the Academy. From 1862 to 1864, he lived in Paris, where Napoleon III was one of his collectors. Mixed media, charcoal and watercolour on card. Attached is a certificate issued by Oga Glevoba in 2014. This work is currently in the home of the owner. 9 x 15.5 cm. SVERCHKOV, a Russian painter known for his everyday scenes, amongst which hunting and battle scenes feature heavily, and in which there are many representations of horses. At ten years of age he was enrolled in the Imperial Academy of Arts and later went on to continue his training at Saint Peter's School. After graduating he found work at the Ministry of the Interior, although he continued to paint in his spare time and won awards in the annual exhibitions organised by the Academy, until he left public service to dedicate himself completely to painting. Between 1856 and 1864 he travelled to London, Paris and Brussels, to then return to Saint Petersburg where he started to receive commissions from the Tsar and the royal court, in which predominated equestrian portraits of the royal family and battle scenes, particularly from the Russian-Turkish war.
