After his return to Ukraine, brighter colors started to proliferate. He was interested mostly in cityscapes of Kiev and in rural landscapes of the surroundings of the city. One of his favorite topics was the Dnieper River. Sergei Ivanovich Svetoslavsky (UKRAINIAN, 1857-1931) Sergei Ivanovich Svetoslavsky was a Ukrainian painter, who depicted landscapes and cityscapes that captured that national character of Russia and Eastern Europe. Svetoslavsky was a careful observer of nature, he depicted the landscapes that surrounded him in a heightened sense of realism. From 1875 to 1883, Svetoslavsky studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Shortly after leaving the Academy he began exhibiting with a group of Russian realist artists, called “The Wanderers”. This group was founded on the beliefs that artists should not be confined to the restrictions of the Academy, and rather they should explore their country and celebrate not only the land but also the people. Svetoslavsky became fascinated with depicting the landscapes and cityscapes that surrounded him. Throughout his career he travelled around Russia and Central Asia, capturing the intense mood of the countryside and also the peasantry. Drawing upon his observations of everyday life, he depicted his subjects in expressive brushstrokes that became his typical of his paintings. Svetoslavsky exhibited with various artist exhibitions throughout Russia and is exhibited at various museums in Russia and Ukraine. Condition: Not lined. The surface is stable. A stretcher mark is evident along all four sides 2 inches from the margin edge.
