Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 32? Toronto stamp issued March 10, 1983. Dodging the snorting locomotive's bursts of steam, crowds of passengers board the long line of cars. The conductor calls out a last warning to late arrivals ... and dense clouds of black, murky smoke belch out of the cone-shaped stack. The great engine begins its rhythmic pant and chugging motion, that gradually swell to a quickened roar. Beyond the town lies the open country, where, gathering speed, the locomotive comes alive with power. With a long trailing whistle, the steam engine signals the train's departure into the Canadian West. Such was the scene from an era long ago ... when the first Canadian-built steam locomotive -- the Toronto -- hauled passengers on the Ontario, Simcoe & Huron Union Railway. Built in 1853, by the James Good Foundry in Toronto, Ontario, the Toronto was a thirty ton, wood-fired steam engine. This historic engine began its career as a passenger locmotive, providing fast and comfortable transportation to people traveling across Canada. Eventually, the Toronto hauled freight as well as passengers. In 1881, the Northern Railway made an important gauge change which made the Toronto obsolete. The grandeur of eagles has inspired men since the Stone Age when drawings of eagles first appeared in European caves. Indeed, the eagle is so respected that it is used as a symbol for everything from the seals of great nations to the human soul. And rightly so, for the eagle is the most majestic of all birds. Few if any other birds dare challenge this royal monarch of the skies, for while normally peaceful, the eagle is capable of defending his territory with frightful authority. Devoted parents, eagles carefully tend their young and share in the responsibilities for feeding and guarding the eaglets. The African Fish Eagle, depicted on this artwork, is one of the most striking of all eagles. Similar in appearance to the Bald Eagle, the Fish Eagle has a white head and breast but lacks the Bald Eagle's white tail. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card for the U.S. 25c Steamboat Phoenix stamp issued March 3, 1989. In the beginning of the steamboat era, two gentlemen by the names of Fulton and Livingston had a monopoly on steamboat operation in the New York area. John Stevens, Jr., a wealthy New Jersey inventor who had also been involved in steamboat development for many years, launched his own steamboat, the Phoenix, in defiance of the Fulton-Livingston monopoly of the area. Stevens worked his steamboat on the Hudson and in New Jersey waters for close to a year, and then decided to move her to the Delaware, far from Fulton-Livingston territory. It was a weighty decision, for it meant that the craft would have to steam through over 150 miles of open water. Nevertheless, the Phoenix put to sea, with Captain Moses Rogers as her master. Thirteen days later, after several delays due to bad weather and engine trouble, the Phoenix reached Philadelphia. The successful completion of her treacherous journey earned the little sidewheeler her place in American history. She was the first ocean-going steamboat in the world! Image Size: 8.75 x 12 in. When steamboats arrived on the Mississippi, it soon became evident that they would have to evolve to meet the requirements of the river in order to be of any use. What was needed was a steamboat that would draw less water and move on the water instead of through it. The craft would need a wide, shallow hull, with heavy boilers and machinery on top of the hull rather than inside it. Captain Henry Shreve took an important step toward building such a steamboat in 1816 with the Washington. Shreve built a deck over the hull and placed the heavy boilers on this deck, and replaced the bulky, low-pressure engine with a new, high-pressure engine. Shreve also got rid of the heavy condenser that allowed the same water to be used over and over again, seeing no need to conserve water while floating on a whole river of it. Passenger accommodations were put on yet a second deck, above the boilers. The Washington could make the trip from New Orleans to Louisville in twenty-five days, an amazing feat in her time. For all her success, the Washington also had tragedy. An explosion on board during her maiden voyage blew Captain Shreve and most of his crew overboard, killing thirteen people. The captain survived to rebuild his steamboat, and the success of the Washington spurred design development. Soon other steamboats were built using the innovations she had pioneered. Indeed, eagles including the Golden Eagle and others have long been symbols cherished by kings, emperors, and nations. For this reason, they have often been used as their emblem. For example, the national seal of Mexico bears the figure of an eagle devouring a serpent which symbolizes to the people of that nation the triumph of good over evil. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 32c Dorchester stamp issued March 10, 1983. The rugged Canadian Rockies ... and the vast, unexplored wilderness blanketed with thick forests and deep ravines ... were once cut only by wild tumbling rivers and an occasional town. Traveling across the untamed Canadian wilderness on horseback or on foot was a difficult ... and often dangerous journey. Many towns were isolated, and trade and communications were poor. However, in 1836, the beginning of a new era was born when a small stretch of track was carved into the land between Montreal and the Richelieu River -- saving ninety miles of river travel. The first railway in Canada -- the Champlain and St. Lawrence -- opened for business on July 21, 1836. Traveling along the stretch of tracks was the first steam locomotive in Canada ... the Dorchester ... built in England by Robert Stephanson & Company. Nicknamed the "Kitten," this magnificent steam engine was equipped with a long, thin smoke stack and an open cab where the engineers fed chopped wood into the glowing furnace. Several years later, the Dorchester was sold to the St. Lawrence & Industrie Railroad where she remained in service until 1864. A derailment and fiery boiler explosion caused irreparable damage, and Canada's first steam locomotive was destroyed. All that is left today of the famous Dorchester is her brass nameplate which was found by a farmer while plowing his field. This painting is the original painting which originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card for the U.S. (25cc) E Earth Rate Change booklet stamp issued March 22, 1988. In 1935, one hundred years to the day after the first clipper ship had sailed into San Francisco Harbor, a new "China Clipper" marked a milestone in the delivery of U.S. mail. As thousands watched in awe, she headed west from San Francisco, flying just above the unfinished Golden Gate Bridge. A cheer went up as she set off on the first transpacific airmail flight with a cargo of 110,000 letters. The Martin M-130, christened "China Clipper," was a seaplane designed specifically for long-distance passenger and mail transport. Her body was made almost entirely of aluminum and her wings were high. Her journey would be eight thousand miles long, and special island bases had to be prepared to accommodate her landing needs. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 25c Steamboat Washington stamp issued March 3, 1989. When steamboats arrived on the Mississippi, it soon became evident that they would have to evolve to meet the requirements of the river in order to be of any use. What was needed was a steamboat that would draw less water and move on the water instead of through it. The craft would need a wide, shallow hull, with heavy boilers and machinery on top of the hull rather than inside it. Captain Henry Shreve took an important step toward building such a steamboat in 1816 with the Washington. Shreve built a deck over the hull and placed the heavy boilers on this deck, and replaced the bulky, low-pressure engine with a new, high-pressure engine. Shreve also got rid of the heavy condenser that allowed the same water to be used over and over again, seeing no need to conserve water while floating on a whole river of it. Passenger accommodations were put on yet a second deck, above the boilers. The Washington could make the trip from New Orleans to Louisville in twenty-five days, an amazing feat in her time. For all her success, the Washington also had tragedy. An explosion on board during her maiden voyage blew Captain Shreve and most of his crew overboard, killing thirteen people. The captain survived to rebuild his steamboat, and the success of the Washington spurred design development. Soon other steamboats were built using the innovations she had pioneered. As the new nation began to trade with Europe and the Middle East, her ships were often attacked by the Barbary Pirates of Tunis and Tripoli. After unsuccessful negotiations between John Adams and the Tripoli government, the American Congress sent Thomas Barclay to neighboring Morocco to negotiate a separate treaty of peace and friendship. Moroccan Emperor Sidi Mohammed III, agreed to provide safe harbor for American merchant vessels - and to intercede when they were seized by the Barbary states. Barclay conceded to the Emperor's demand for a nominal annual monetary tribute. Thus, an agreement was reached. In Morocco's capital, Marrakech, on June 23, 1786, the Treaty of Marrakech was signed. The next summer, on July 18, 1787, the treaty of peace and friendship was ratified by Congress and thus began the longest unbroken amnity treaty in American diplomatic history. Morocco was among the first nations to recognize the independence of the United States after the Revolutionary War. As the new nation began to trade with Europe and the Middle East, her ships were often attacked by the Barbary Pirates of Tunis and Tripoli. After unsuccessful negotiations between John Adams and the Tripoli government, the American Congress sent Thomas Barclay to neighboring Morocco to negotiate a separate treaty of peace and friendship. Moroccan Emperor Sidi Mohammed III, agreed to provide safe harbor for American merchant vessels - and to intercede when they were seized by the Barbary states. Barclay conceded to the Emperor's demand for a nominal annual monetary tribute. Thus, an agreement was reached. In Morocco's capital, Marrakech, on June 23, 1786, the Treaty of Marrakech was signed. The next summer, on July 18, 1787, the treaty of peace and friendship was ratified by Congress and thus began the longest unbroken amnity treaty in American diplomatic history. The rugged Canadian Rockies ... and the vast, unexplored wilderness blanketed with thick forests and deep ravines ... were once cut only by wild tumbling rivers and an occasional town. Traveling across the untamed Canadian wilderness on horseback or on foot was a difficult ... and often dangerous journey. Many towns were isolated, and trade and communications were poor. However, in 1836, the beginning of a new era was born when a small stretch of track was carved into the land between Montreal and the Richelieu River -- saving ninety miles of river travel. The first railway in Canada -- the Champlain and St. Lawrence -- opened for business on July 21, 1836. Traveling along the stretch of tracks was the first steam locomotive in Canada ... the Dorchester ... built in England by Robert Stephanson & Company. Nicknamed the "Kitten," this magnificent steam engine was equipped with a long, thin smoke stack and an open cab where the engineers fed chopped wood into the glowing furnace. Several years later, the Dorchester was sold to the St. Lawrence & Industrie Railroad where she remained in service until 1864. A derailment and fiery boiler explosion caused irreparable damage, and Canada's first steam locomotive was destroyed. All that is left today of the famous Dorchester is her brass nameplate which was found by a farmer while plowing his field. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 32c Dorchester stamp issued March 10, 1983. The rugged Canadian Rockies .. and the vast, unexplored wilderness blanketed with thick forests and deep ravines .. were once cut only by wild tumbling rivers and an occasional town. Traveling across the untamed Canadian wilderness on horseback or on foot was a difficult .. and often dangerous journey. Many towns were isolated, and trade and communications were poor. However, in 1836, the beginning of a new era was born when a small stretch of track was carved into the land between Montreal and the Richelieu River -- saving ninety miles of river travel. The first railway in Canada -- the Champlain and St. Lawrence -- opened for business on July 21, 1836. Traveling along the stretch of tracks was the first steam locomotive in Canada .. the Dorchester .. built in England by Robert Stephanson & Company. Nicknamed the "Kitten," this magnificent steam engine was equipped with a long, thin smoke stack and an open cab where the engineers fed chopped wood into the glowing furnace. Several years later, the Dorchester was sold to the St. Lawrence & Industrie Railroad where she remained in service until 1864. A derailment and fiery boiler explosion caused irreparable damage, and Canada's first steam locomotive was destroyed. All that is left today of the famous Dorchester is her brass nameplate which was found by a farmer while plowing his field.                   John Swatsley (American, B. 1937) "Brother Jonathan Locomotive" Original watercolor painting on illustration board. Signed lower right. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This is the original watercolor painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card for the U.S. 22c Brother Jonathan stamp issued October 1, 1987. The early 1830's were marked by improvements in the railroad industry. A man named John Jervis was among the innovators. Jervis was chief engineer for the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad. In 1832, he made improvements which would become standard in locomotives through-out the country. His idea was to lighten the engine by removing the rigid front axle with its single pair of wheels and substituting a front truck with two axles and four wheels. The "Experiment" was built at the West Point Foundry according to Jervis' new design. It was a success adn Jervis' concept was adopted almost immeditatley. The engine was renamed "Brother Johathan" and, achieving speeds of 60 miles per hour, became the fastest locomotive in the world. "Brother Jonathon" was later converted to an eight-sheel construction and served for many years along the rails of America. Jervis had thus paved the way for "Americanization" of the locomotive.
