The mascot is a design by Charles Sykes, based on actress and model Eleanor Thornton. As on the original 1911 design, those same graceful draperies, elegant style and angelic features are faithfully preserved in this highly-detailed and hand-finished Limited Edition of the Rolls-Royce' Spirit of Ecstasy' Showroom Statues. With the approach of the 100th anniversary of the creation of Charles Sykes' legendary mascot design, a limited edition of 50 statues of the Rolls-Royce' Spirit of Ecstasy' Showroom Statues was created. Standing 69 cm high with a wingspan of 36 cm, this exquisitely detailed sculpture has been created using an original 1930s Rolls-Royce showroom statuette as a key point of reference. CHARLES ROBINSON SYKES, 'RILETTEâ (BRITISH 1875-1950) CHARLES ROBINSON SYKES, 'RILETTEâ (BRITISH 1875-1950) The bath pencil, with touches of brown ink 36.9 x 51 cm PROVENANCE: Christopher Cone and Stanley J. Seeger, Whitby. The sculptor, painter and graphic designer Charles Robinson Sykes is perhaps best known for the design of the Spirit of Ecstasy figure used on Rolls-Royce cars, which he executed in 1911. Born in Yorkshire to an artistic family, in 1898 Sykes won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London. He then established a successful career in the capital as both a fine and commercial artist. After 1911, building on his success of his work for Rolls-Royce, Sykes was asked to design the gold and silver cups for Ascot, and also received other commissions for ceremonial gold and silverware, as well as numerous trophies and medals. After the First World War he began to focus more on the commercial projects, works signed with the pseudonym âRiletteâ. Over the next few years he produced numerous fashion drawings which filled the pages of the Sunday Dispatch and the monthly covers of the magazine Woman.

The artist John Buckland Wright, principally known for his etchings and engravings, was a friend of Charles Sykes, owning a number of his works. According to Wright's family, these were all given to him directly by Sykes. The sculptor Charles Sykes, best known for his ‘Spirit of Ecstasy’ for Rolls Royce (see following lot), also worked as an illustrator, which apparently is how he got to know Wright.

Dargestellt ist eine stilisierte, sich vorbeugende junge Frau mit vom Wind bewegtem Kleid, inspiriert von der antiken Nike von Samothrake. Modell stand ihm Eleanor Thornton, Sekretärin und Geliebte des britischen Adeligen und privaten Rolls-Royce Besitzers John Walter Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu, 2nd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu.
