Synge addresses this short note to actor and director Ben Iden Payne at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin: "I am too tired out to go to see you tonight, so I'll turn up at matinee on Saturday, and I'll see you then." In 1907 Payne briefly served as director of the Abbey theater, co-founded by Synge and Lady Gregory. Synge's masterpiece, The Playboy of the Western World, provoked rioting at its premier at the Abbey in 1907. See illustration.
