During his time as a photography teacher at Malverne High School in Long Island in the 1970s and 1980s, Joseph Szabo documented the life of his students and their friends on campus and in their free time with an observant and insightful eye. This shot of a girl smoking a cigarette on Long Island Beach was one of Szabo's most important photographs. It was used in 1991 by the grunge band Dinosaur Jr on the cover of their album "Green Mind".

Joseph Szabo, who had received his training at the Pratt Institute in New York, began to portray the lives of American youngsters while working as an art teacher at a high school in the 1970s. In 1978 he published a powerful collection of teenagers' portraits in a photobook called "Almost Grown". Cornell Capa said in his preface to the book: (...) (ibid.) The cover of the book shows a detail from the photograph offered here, which Szabo took at one of his favourite locations, Jones Beach on Long Island.
