Arthur Szyk (1894-1951) Polish/American, (5) Framed Illustration Prints. Part of Szyk's "The Visual History of Nations" Series (10 nations total), originally printed from 1949 to 1951. Includes France, Poland, Israel, Canada, and the U.S.S.R. Labels with prior gallery information on the back of each one.  Frame: 15 1/8 x 13 3/4 in. Sight: 7 7/8 x 6 3/8 in. #2610 .  Arthur Szyk was born June 3rd, 1894 in Łódź, Poland. Although his family had been culturally assimilated and did not practice Orthodox Judaism, Arthur liked drawing scenes from the Torah early on. His father sent Szyk to Paris to study at the Académie Julian in 1912. Although he was exposed to many modern trends in art, he became especially influenced by medieval illuminated manuscripts. Many of the caricatures he produced during his time at the Académie were published in the satirical magazine Śmiech (“Laughter”) that circulated in Łódź. Szyk returned to Poland in 1914 and continued his studies in Teodor Axentowicz’s class at Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. He traveled with other Polish-Jewish artists and writers to Palestine, but when World War I broke out during the visit he was conscripted into the Imperial Russian Army, fighting at the battle of Łódź in November of 1914. In 1916 Szyk married Julia Likerman, with whom he had two children. In 1919, influenced by the events of the German Revolution, he published his first book of political illustrations, and served as the artistic director of the Propaganda Department of the Polish Army during the Polish-Soviet War. In 1921 his family fled to France to escape the chaos engulfing Eastern Europe, where his reputation grew substantially, although his work was ironically criticized for perpetuating Jewish stereotypes. A series of 38 watercolors he made depicting the American Revolutionary War were exhibited at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. in 1934. From 1934 to 1936 he worked on what is considered his magnum opus, the Illustrated Haggadah, a pivotal story in Jewish history about the Exodus of the Israelites from ancient Egypt. Szyk created 48 miniature paintings for it, introducing many contemporary elements to it in response to Nazi policies in Germany. In 1937 he moved the family to London to supervise the publication of the work. When it was finally released in 1940 it was widely acclaimed for its coloring and modern translation, and became the most expensive book in the world at the time. A presentation of his paintings at the 1939 New York World’s Fair led to his family being granted safe passage to America when World War II began, eventually settling in New York City. He worked tirelessly throughout the war creating pro-Allied propaganda, which solidified much opposition to the Axis powers even before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He also produced advertisements for Coca-Cola and US Steel, and exhibited in the Brooklyn Museum, the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, and the White House. At the end of the war Szyk and his family moved to New Canaan, Connecticut. The artist returned to book illustrations, and in his final years he was a fervent supporter of equal rights for African-Americans, becoming a target of the House Un-American Activities Committee. He died of a heart attack on September 13th, 1951, and although his work had a tremendous impact on politics, advertising, and modern caricature and satire, his popularity dwindled into obscurity during the Cold War, with only a handful of exhibitions, all in the United States, since the 1990s.

ARTHUR SZYK (1894-1951) Israel Bond certificate study. Study for the first Israel Bond certificate, c. 1950. Ink and watercolor on paper, 349x489 mm; 13 3/4x19 1/4 inches (sheet). Faded signature in lower right corner, "SZYK." Israel Bonds came into existence after Israel's War of Independence, when the nation was critically short of economic resources. Realizing that the struggling country desperately needed financial resources, Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion declared that the government bonds "must be mobilized by the Jewries of the world, and especially," he emphasized, "the Jews of the United States." Szyk's well-established love of the Land of Israel influenced his decision to create the artwork and raise funds for the newborn Jewish state. The first bond was issued in February 1951, prior to Szyk's death in September that year. Source: Israel Bonds | Invest in Israel. Arthur Szyk Original Pencil Sketch of Marshal Pétain and Vichy France

          Est: $1,200 - $1,500

Arthur Szyk Original Pencil Sketch of Marshal Pétain and Vichy France An original pencil drawing on paper by Polish-Jewish artist Arthur Szyk. Signed by the illustrator as "Arthur Szyk / N.Y. 1941" at lower left corner. The illustration depicts the personification of Vichy France, officially known as the French State when the country of France was occupied by Nazi Germany. French Marshal Philippe Pétain is seated with a defeated look on his face and wearing a French uniform with Nazi insignia on it. The capital of the French State, Vichy, is seen chained to a pole. The sketch has been mounted and framed to the overall size of 10" x 9". Not examined out of the frame. Minor soiling to the mat. Very fine, with a clear signature. Vichy had been a spa and resort town prior to World War II. When France was invaded, Prime Minister Paul Reynaud chose to resign rather than sign an armistice and was replaced by Marshal Philippe Pétain. Shortly thereafter, Pétain signed the Armistice of June 22, 1940, and Vichy was recognized as a "Free Zone" from Nazi occupation. At Vichy, Pétain established an authoritarian government that reversed many liberal policies and began tight supervision of the economy. The media were tightly controlled and promoted antisemitism and anti-Sovietism. Vichy also had to pay a heavy tribute in gold, food, and supplies to Germany, and French police were ordered to round up Jews and other "undesirables" - at least 72,500 Jews were killed as a result. Arthur Szyk (1894-1951) was a talented illustrator who became one of the most important political cartoonists of World War II, and his drawings were published in major magazines and five times made the cover of "Time." Szyk's depictions of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Emperor Hirohito, Francisco Franco, Joseph Goebbels, Henrich Himmler, Hermann Goering, Hideki Tojo, Pierre Laval, Henri Pétain and other Axis leaders and Axis puppets fueled the American war propaganda machine. This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses. The original artwork was created in New York, 1945. Signed "Arthur Szyk" at the lower right corner. Very fine with a bold signature. Housed in an attractive, gold frame. In contrast to Szyk’s typical portraiture in the Visual History series, there are no faces of famous scientists, artists, or politicians in his United States print. Szyk chose instead to highlight the everyday man: farmers, industrial workers, Native Americans, and military personnel. Arthur Szyk Signed Original Drawing Depicting Japanese "Expert in Chivalry" Condemning Eisenhower's Operation Torch Maneuvers

          Est: $2,400 - $3,500

Arthur Szyk Signed Original Drawing Depicting Japanese "Expert in Chivalry" Condemning Eisenhower's Operation Torch Maneuvers An original pen and pencil drawing on paper by Polish-Jewish artist Arthur Szyk (1894-1952), ca. 1942, entitled "The Expert in Chivalry: Eisenhower is Not a Gentleman…" Signed and inscribed by the illustrator as "Arthur Szyk / N.Y. / 42" at lower right, with the work title running along the bottom edge. Expected wear including a few minor surface abrasions found at left not affecting the image, else near fine. Matted and framed behind glass in an ebonized frame. Not examined out of the frame. Bearing a label verso reading in part, "Courtesy of Mrs. Alexandra Bracie," the artist's daughter. The sight size of the drawing is 5.5" x 7.5" while the overall framed size is 12.25" x 15.25" x .5." Provenance: Consigned directly from Arthur Szyk's family. Szyk's original pencil drawing has been meticulously outlined and expertly cross-hatched in pen. The cartoon depicts a Japanese archetype--a racial stereotype-- pointing disdainfully at a bulletin headlined "U.S. Army / In North Africa / Gen. Eisenhower / Appeals to the French." Though the soldier is wearing a Japanese military uniform, he sports a swastika armband and a Totenkopf insignia (skull and cross bones.) His sash is inscribed "Pearl Harbor / Dec. 7 1941." Szyk has exaggerated the soldier's physical features in a racialized way entirely consistent with Allied wartime propaganda of the time. We believe that this is a depiction of a Japanese archetype, and not a portrait of Emperor Hirohito, because of important differences in physical appearance and uniform. Szyk's depictions of Hirohito depict the emperor with open eyes, a thicker mustache, and without coke-bottle eyeglasses or buckteeth. The newspaper that Szyk's Japanese caricature is reading referred to the imminent dual British and American invasion of North Africa, a mission called Operation Torch. The objective was to neutralize French Vichy forces in French colonial territory (Morocco and Algeria) and then pin Axis forces, among them Nazi Field Marshal Erwin Rommel and his Afrika Korps, between two pincers. Allied landings in North Africa took place in early November 1942 and were largely successful. The Japanese archetype proclaims that Allied mission commander Dwight D. Eisenhower's dealings in North Africa showed he was "not a gentleman." The hypocrisy of this statement would not have been lost to Szyk's viewers. Many Americans decried the fact that Pearl Harbor was bombed just two days after Japanese negotiators visited Washington, D.C. in an attempt to reduce international tensions. In another illustration, Szyk shows a Japanese archetype very much like this one stabbing a cowboy--representing America--in the back. Arthur Szyk was a talented illustrator who settled permanently in the United States after 1940. He used his technical knowledge of medieval and Renaissance book illumination to create intricate drawings and illustrations commenting on history, spiritual life, and modern politics. Szyk became one of the most important political cartoonists of World War II, and his drawings were published in major magazines and five times made the cover of "Time." Szyk's ruthless depictions of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Emperor Hirohito, Francisco Franco, Joseph Goebbels, Henrich Himmler, Hermann Goering, Hideki Tojo, Pierre Laval, Henri Pétain and other Axis leaders and Axis puppets fueled the American war propaganda machine. Arthur Szyk Illuminated Manuscript, "This Bible is for the Government of the People, by the People, and for the People"

          Est: $900 - $1,000

Arthur Szyk Illuminated Manuscript, "This Bible is for the Government of the People, by the People, and for the People" An illuminated manuscript by Polish-Jewish artist Arthur Szyk (1894-1952), probably part of a preparatory study for a Szyk-illustrated frontispiece later published in Mortimer J. Cohen, "Pathways Through The Bible" (Philadelphia: Jewish Publication Society of America, 1946), an abridged version of the Old Testament intended for young readers. The original artwork is comprised of 16 words of text, "This Bible is for the Government of the People, by the People, and for the People," carefully delineated in Gothic lettering in red and black ink on a stock card. Complete with a medieval-inspired foliate flourish near the end. Provenance: Consigned directly from Arthur Szyk's family. The illuminated manuscript is displayed in a floating mount (appearing to be hinged at the ends) at the center. Expected surface wear including the slightest edge darkening, else near fine. Matted and framed behind glass in a frame showing expected wear. Not examined out of the frame. Hand-stamped on the frame backing verso, "Aug 11 1999." The sight size of the illuminated manuscript is 4" x 1" while the overall framed size is 8.75" x 6.625" x 1.25." This quote, "This Bible is for the Government of the People, by the People, and for the People" is part of the frontispiece illustration that Szyk designed for Mortimer J. Cohen's young religious reader. The illustration depicts an open Torah scroll, with the adapted quote from Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address at center, flanked by Moses and Aaron at the terminals, and bordered by a menorah at top and a six-pointed star at bottom (see the attached photo of the Cohen's title page for a point of comparison.) In his biography of the artist, "Arthur Szyk: Artist, Jew, Pole" (Liverpool: The Littman Library of Jewish Civilization, 2004), Joseph P. Ansell argues that the frontispiece, with its blend of religious and civic allusions, served "as a reminder to young Jewish Americans of the single foundation of their dual heritage" (p. 176). Arthur Szyk was a talented illustrator who settled permanently in the United States after 1940. He used his technical knowledge of medieval and Renaissance book illumination to create intricate drawings and illustrations commenting on history, spiritual life, and modern politics. Arthur Szyk Original Ink & Pencil Sketch of WWI Soldier Reading The Balfour Declaration An original ink and pencil drawing on paper by Polish-Jewish artist Arthur Szyk, entitled "The Balfour Declaration" depicting an Austro-Hungarian soldier sitting in a trench while reading the news of the Balfour Declaration. Surrounding him are various weapons and tools. Measuring 5.5" x 7". Signed by the illustrator as "Arthur Szyk / New Canaan / 1948" at lower right. At the bottom of the sheet is a scrawled notation in pencil reading: " Please Return This Drawing After Reproducing…A.S." Expected surface wear to the frame including isolated chips. A label verso reads in part, "Courtesy of Mrs. Alexandra Bracie." Alexandra Bracie (1922-2016) was the artist's daughter. The Balfour Declaration was a public statement issued by the British government in 1917 in which it announced its support for the establishment of a "national home for the Jewish people" in Palestine. The declaration was originally contained in a letter dated November 2, 1917, from the United Kingdom's Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Lord Rothschild, a leader of the British Jewish community, for transmission to the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland. The statement would be published publicly one week later. Arthur Szyk (1894-1951) was a talented illustrator who settled permanently in the United States after 1940. Arthur Szyk Original Large Pencil Drawing of Polish Peasant

          Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Arthur Szyk Original Large Pencil Drawing of Polish Peasant An original large pencil drawing on an unknown mount (possibly a textured paper on stock) by Polish-Jewish artist Arthur Szyk (1894-1952). The seated figure spans a massive 16" in height alone! N.d., n.p. but attributed by the artist's family to date from ca. 1930s Paris, France. Initialed by the illustrator as "A.S." at lower right. Matted and framed behind glass in an ebonized frame. Not examined out of the frame. Near fine. The sight size of the image is 9.875" x 18.25" while the overall framed size is 15.5" x 23.875" x .5." The frame shows minor expected wear. Bearing a typed label verso reading in part, "Courtesy of Mrs. Alexandra Bracie," the artist's daughter. Provenance: Consigned directly from Arthur Szyk's family. The untitled work is referred to as "Unfinished Study of a Peasant / In Memory of Lodz" on a typed label verso. The drawing depicts an elderly man hunched over a cane, his care-worn face set with a mournful expression. The figure is wearing a fisherman's cap and heavy coat, suggesting both the man's poverty and a sense of extreme cold. Szyk's family's working title of this piece, "Unfinished Study of a Peasant / In Memory of Lodz" draws a direct connection between this drawing and Szyk's hometown of Lodz, Poland. Szyk maintained ties to Lodz even while he was away studying art in Paris and Krakow, and as a young expatriate. He was conscripted into the Russian Army and fought at the 3-week-long Battle of Lodz (November - December 1914), and later, served as a Polish cavalry officer headquartered in Lodz during the Polish-Soviet War of 1919-1920. Perhaps this huddled figure may have been inspired by Szyk's childhood reminiscences of his hometown, or by some of Szyk's wartime experiences in and around Lodz. Arthur Szyk was a talented illustrator who settled permanently in the United States after 1940. He used his technical knowledge of medieval and Renaissance book illumination to create intricate drawings and illustrations commenting on history, spiritual life, and modern politics. Arthur Szyk, Two Original Unsigned Drawings of WWII-Era Soviet & Polish Soldiers

          Est: $3,000 - $4,000

Arthur Szyk, Two Original Unsigned Drawings of WWII-Era Soviet & Polish Soldiers Two original drawings depicting World War II-era soldiers from the Eastern Front by Polish-Jewish artist Arthur Szyk (1894-1952), unsigned. Each drawing can be found on either side of a single sheet of drawing paper, loosely matted. The drawing recto, in pencil, brown colored pencil, and ink, depicts a heavily armed Polish soldier; while the pencil drawing verso shows a Soviet soldier standing at ease. Expected wear including even toning, and isolated wrinkles or repaired closed tears. The Soviet soldier side of the paper has some scattered chipped edges and stains, and is taped along the edges in five separate areas to the mat. Else very good to near fine. The sight size of the Polish soldier is 7.875" x 10.375." The actual size of the Soviet soldier is 8.875" x 11.75." The overall size of the mat is 10.875" x 13.875." Provenance: Consigned directly from Arthur Szyk's family. The drawing recto of the Polish soldier shows him wearing a rogatywka, or soft, peaked, four-pointed cap, bearing a modified Polish coat of arms, or white eagle crest. Szyk has outlined key elements of the drawing--facial features, hands, clothing, arms, and ammunition--in either brown colored pencil or ink, leaving some pencil strokes visible. In this way, one can understand more of Szyk's artistic process, and how he sometimes deviated from his original pencil sketch. For example, Szyk raised the soldier's belt pouch about .25" above its initial placement in the final ink version of the illustration. The drawing verso shows the head of a Soviet soldier carefully delineated in pencil, with the torso in a more unfinished state. The soldier is wearing an Astrakhan fur hat bearing a single scarlet star. Arthur Szyk was a talented illustrator who settled permanently in the United States after 1940. He used his technical knowledge of medieval and Renaissance book illumination to create intricate drawings and illustrations commenting on history, spiritual life, and modern politics. Arthur Szyk Original Drawing Depicting Franco Riding & Leading "People of Spain"

          Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Arthur Szyk Original Drawing Depicting Franco Riding & Leading "People of Spain" An original pen and pencil drawing on stock card by Polish-Jewish artist Arthur Szyk (1894-1952), ca. 1943, entitled "Franco: 'Keeps Him Going My Way.'" Signed and inscribed by the illustrator as "Arthur Szyk / N.Y. / 43" at lower right, with the work's title running along the bottom edge. Expected surface wear including the slightest edge darkening, else near fine. Matted and framed behind glass in a frame showing expected superficial scuffs and finish loss. Not examined out of the frame. Bearing a vintage "The Hogarth Shop / Pictures & Frames" framing label verso, as well as a label reading in part, "Courtesy of Mrs. Alexandra Bracie," the artist's daughter. The sight size of the drawing is 4" x 5.875" while the overall framed size is 10.75" x 13.75" x .625." Provenance: Consigned directly from Arthur Szyk's family. Szyk's original pencil drawing has been meticulously outlined and expertly cross-hatched in pen. The cartoon depicts Spanish dictator Francisco Franco (1892-1975) riding an emaciated horse whose rear flanks are printed "People of Spain." In his left hand, Franco wields a fishing pole attached to a tin can labeled "U.S.A. Food," which the sweating horse eyes with desperation. In contrast to Classical Age equestrian representations of military leaders, like Marcus Aurelius or Augustus, Franco is a figure of mockery. Perched on a bed pillow on the back of the starving nag, he is shabbily dressed in an old, patched uniform with Nazi regalia, his detached shoe sole revealing the toes on his right foot. His vacant facial expression suggests a total lack of intelligence. Franco manipulated the Spanish people through the promise of international food aid, Szyk's cartoon suggests. The autocrat and his government failed to provide an abundant, affordable supply of food to the Spanish populace following the end of the Spanish Civil War, during an era sometimes referred to as the "Years of Hunger" (1939-1952). Franco's own policies were in part responsible for famines that scourged Spain in 1939, 1942, and 1946, though shortages were often concealed or blamed on external forces. Szyk's cartoon alludes to the complex nature of Spain's de facto and de jure diplomatic relations with both the Axis and Allied Powers during World War II. Spain remained officially neutral throughout the war, but Franco was intensely partisan, courting the Fascists at every turn, and accepting aid, investments, and materiel from Hitler and Mussolini. The Allied Powers realized as early as 1940 that the real imperative was not alienating Spain and tipping them over the edge of "belligerent nation" status. It was in the best interest of Great Britain and the United States, then, to keep Spain manageable. The Allies' leverage was oil, fertilizer chemicals, wheat, and meat that Spain badly needed. It's estimated that the American Red Cross collected and distributed some 20,000 tons of food to Spain in just six months, and Canada and Argentina also supplied food aid. The Allies were playing the long game of supply and demand; in addition to "neutralizing" Spain through aid, they also preemptively purchased things from Spain that the Axis needed, such as wolfram ore, in order to disrupt their enemy's supply chains. Arthur Szyk - Twenty Pictures from Glorious Days of the Polish American Fraternity

          Est: -

Twenty Pictures from Glorious Days of the Polish American Fraternity - A complete set of postcards designed by Arthur Szyk, with the original paper envelope, and the explanatory booklet in English and Polish, all complete. Published by Drukarnia Narodowa, Krakow, 1939. Postcards featuring illustrious figures in American history of Polish descent. The explanatory page lists the names of American heroes of Polish origin, starting with John McCollne who preceded Columbus by sixteen years, when he arrived on American shores in 1476, the "Academy" founded in 1659 in New Amsterdam by a Pole, "Alexander Charles Curtius" was the first high school in America, and another Pole, Leopold Bock, founded the first American technical school in New York, and many more. As is known, Arthur Szyk's origin was in Lodz, Poland, and as early as 1931 he was engaged in art related to the American way of life by creating illustrations of President George Washington and the American Revolution. In 1934 he visited the United States in order to receive a special decoration from the American Congress, on the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of George Washington. During the 1930s, the Polish and British authorities sent him to the United States to encourage American society to oppose Nazism. And in December 1940 he settled in the town of New Canaan in Connecticut as a final and complete act of the uncompromising identification of the great Polish artist with the American nation, where he lived until his death. This series came out a year earlier and it brings to light the peak of Szyk's deep connection to the American nation in a series that shows how from the beginning, it was the Poles who held the key positions in the development of America, the country he so admired, in which he continued to create until his death. On the back of each postcard is a description about the painted Polish figure and his part in the history of America. 20 postcards. 15x11 cm. Explanatory booklet. Original envelope. Everything in complete. Very good condition.
