Composition. Aquarell. Sign. und dat. (19)62/I. 49,5 x 61 cm.

        Est: €700 - €750

ENRIQUE TÁBARA ZERNA (Guayaquil, Ecuador 1930 - Buena Fe, 2021). Untitled, 1958. Mixed media on paper. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. Measurements: 40 x 35 cm; 46 x 41 cm (frame). He was a master of Ecuadorian painting and represented the Hispanic pictorial and artistic culture as a whole. He is considered by some critics as the most creative Ecuadorian painter in the second half of the 20th century. In 1946, he entered the School of Fine Arts where he was taught by the German Hans Michaelson. The first important exhibition for the painter was the one he made in Guayaquil in December 1951. He was granted a scholarship to study in Spain. Based in Barcelona, he came into contact with the informalism of the group led by Antoni Tapies. His painting at this time went beyond the limits of geometry, but without renouncing his passionate search for motifs rooted in the traditions of his homeland. In Spain, once he finished his scholarship, he worked as a furniture restorer and continued studying. Continuous exhibitions both in Spain - Sarriá, Madrid, Barcelona - and in other European cities - Paris, Munich, Milan, Lisbon, Bremen - brought him a well-deserved fame, since pre-Columbian motifs were highly appreciated. Also in this year, the Swiss George Kasper, owner of an art gallery in Lausanne, hired him for five years to promote and sell his paintings exclusively. He accepted the engagement, but had to break it soon after because his wife -Spanish Esther Villalba Porta- did not get used to living in Switzerland. After an exhibition in Washington, he returned definitively to Guayaquil in 1964.

Enrique Tabara, (1930-2021, Equador), "Paseantes en la Calle," 1983-84, Oil on prepared canvas, 43" H x 43" W

        Est: $1,000 - $2,000

Enrique Tabara (1930-2021, Equador) "Paseantes en la Calle," 1983-84 Oil on prepared canvas Signed and dated lower left: Tabara '83; signed and dated again: E. Tabara '84, and titled, verso 43" H x 43" W Provenance: The Carolyn J. Adrian Collection, South Pasadena, CA Notes: The thick, distinct forms depicted across the surface of this painting suggest that Tabara may have used an encaustic technique to create it. Tabara studied at the Escuela Artes in Guayaquil from 1946-1951 where he studied with Luis Martinez Serrano. In 1955 he received a grant to go to Spain, where he lived until 1964. He first used Expressionism as a reaction against Indigenism. He started the Ecuadorian artist group VAN against the influence of Indigenism. Tabara's work was central to the Latin American movement, which began to abandon social realism in the 1950's. In his early work he painted characters on the margins of society in a hard and grotesque manner. Tabara first exhibited in the United States at the OAS in 1954. From 1953 he started to experiment with abstraction, and in the 1960's he constructed a language of magical and mythical connotations derived from Pre-Columbian calligraphy and Surrealism. His work from this period is rich in texture, combining elements glued to the canvas, serial calligraphy and telluric forms. In 1969 he began to search for new signs, notably feet and legs (his pata-pata motif) and from 1985 he revitalized his use of color and added leafy vegetation to the feet and legs in his quest to create morphologies compatible with the mythical culture of American man. Tabara has exhibited worldwide. - Carolyn Adrian This work is accompanied by an artist bio and a photograph of the artist with the work.
