Jazeh Tabatabai Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1931 - d. 2008

Jazeh Tabatabai (1931 – February 9, 2008) was an Iranian avant-garde painter, poet, and sculptor.

Tabatabai received over 10 major international awards for his paintings and sculptures. He was the founder and director of the Iran Modern Art Gallery in Tehran, Iran.

Tabatabai's present fame is mostly due to his creative figures and metal sculptures which he assembled with parts from old machinery and cars. His style is close to the Saghaneh School; milk-women and suns are repeating themes in his work. For this reason, he is cited alongside a handful of other influential Iranian artists as a pioneer of the Saghaneh School, which took form in the 80s.

Tabatabai wrote his first story, titled "Sand and Straw", at the age of 12 and subsequently entered other artistic fields. He went on to write and direct such plays as "Withering Blossoms", "Lord Chichi Yanf", "Footstep", and "Mister Muchul", and produced another of his own plays called "Scout Association". In 1947 he published "The Little Boy", a story.

In 1951 Tabatabai earned a diploma from the School of Arts and displayed his art, which was then miniatures at his first art exhibition. Four years later he achieved the position of top student in the Film Direction and Principles of Theatre program at the Iranian College of Literature and produced the play "Sailor's Shirt".

In 1961, he completed his painting courses at the College of Fine Arts and established the Modern Iran Art Gallery, the first art gallery in Iran.

JAZEH TABATABAI (Tehran, 1931 - 2008). Untitled. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Provenance: Saira Gallery (Vigo). Collection of the director of the Oceanographic Museum of Vigo, Aída Fernández. Measurements: 81 x 130 cm; 97,5 x 147 cm (frame). A painter and sculptor trained at the School of Dramatic Art and the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Tehran, Tabatabai became one of the most important artists in avant-garde Iranian art. He worked in painting, poetry and sculpture, always creating works that challenged the traditional conception of art. Tabatabai, a recipient of several awards, founded the Iran Modern Art Gallery, which brought him international recognition and led him to exhibit in many countries, including Germany, Sweden, India, China, Monaco and Spain. His style is characterised by innovation both in its conception and in the materials used (nuts, springs and screws), which the artist combined in different ways in his imagination, resulting in unique and unmistakable works. His paintings are characterised by depicting characters with orientalising features, such as round-faced women with slanted eyes or even animals with the face of a woman. Many of his works are accompanied by the figure of the sun, an indispensable element in Persian culture. Jazeh Tabatabai spent his last years in the city of Vigo, where he produced works such as the one shown here. His relationship with Spain led him to paint a series of Meninas, as well as other bulls and bullfighters. His works have been exhibited in temporary exhibitions at the Tehran Biennial in its I, II, III, IV and V editions, as well as at the Paris, Sao Paulo and Venice Biennials. Some of his works are in private collections and in museums around the world, including the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and a large part of his collection is currently housed in the Museum of Modern Art in Tehran.

Provenance:Property from a private collection, BaltimoreAcquired directly from the Artist by the present owner in Iran, 1968Jazeh Tabatabai, the Iranian avant-garde painter, poet and sculptor, was one of the pioneers of modern art in Iran. Jazeh's first medium of self-expression was the written word: he published his first book at the age of twelve. Believing that different ideas demand different media, Jazeh explained, "For some I need colour, for some I need three-dimensional sculpture, for some movement, and for some words. I have sought rather to enlarge my capacity for expression through mastering a wide-range of techniques."Working in metal, Jazeh's playful sculptures possess an artistic sensibility, dancing in the junkyards of modern technology. Jazeh assembled these astonishing sculptures from metal gaskets, cylinder valves, coils, crankshafts and spring's gearboxes and a range of scrap parts. Bolted, welded and screwed together into various amalgamations, they appear to have been spontaneously born in some mysterious industrial womb. Movement is a central factor in the character of all the sculptures. The works are built in such a way that their component parts can be moved. The artist's wish was for the viewer to participate by changing the sculptures and setting them in motion for themselves.
