      Isaiah West Taber [San Francisco 1830-1912) original sketch on paperboard. Measures 7.875 in. x 7.875 in. Stain smeared lower edge. Very good condition. Unframed, loose and not glued or mounted. Provenance: Estate collection of William Greenbaum, Gloucester, Massachusetts, Proprietor of William Greenbaum Fine Prints. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Condition report is provided as an opinion only and is no guarantee as condition can be subjective. Buyer must view photographs or scans to assist in determining condition and ask further questions if so desired. Our in-house shipping department will gladly pack and ship any item that fits into a 14x14x14 inch or 30x5x24 inch or equivalent or smaller box/folio if it is not fragile or over 25lbs. We will charge for labor to pack and process based on actual time it takes, actual cost of materials used to pack and actual shipper charges that will include insurance and signature required. We generally use USPS and Fed Ex and compare the pricing between the two. Books maximum box size will be 14x14x14 inch or equivalent and will be shipped USPS Media Mail unless otherwise requested.       Views of San Francisco. 1890s. 9 albumen prints. Each circa 20 x 24,5 cm. Each with photographer's name, title and number in lower edge in the negative, mounted to board (minimal soiling). - - Together with the creditor John G. Cook, Taber took over Carleton E. Watkins' negatives and gallery in the 1870s when Watkins went bankrupt. Later in 1906, Taber himself lost his gallery and negatives, which included 80 tons of portrait negatives and 20 tons of view negatives, in the devastating fire that followed the San Francisco earthquake.       Album / Albumen Prints of the American West. The photo album is red leather with gold leaf and contains 46 photographs from San Francisco, Monterey, Santa Cruz, Carmel, San Diego, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Truckee, Niagara Falls, and Arizona. Images are mounted back-to-back on thick album leaves. The album was published by I.W. Taber and contains 9 photos taken by Charles Wallace Jacob Johnson (1830-1903),17 photos and 2 prints published by I.W. Taber, 3 photos signed and 2 attributed to Charles Roscoe Savage (1832-1909), 2 unsigned photos by A. Frank Randall (1854-1916), 1 photo attributed to Elias Atkinson Bonine (1843-1916), 6 photos possibly by George Barker (1844-1894). The images by Taber likely include images by Carleton Watkins (1829-1916). Taber purchased Watkins' studio in 1876 and reproduced his work. Images include a portrait of Jicarilla Apache Chief Augustin Yijil or Vigil, Apache infants, and a Yuma woman with two young children. There are numerous images of Chinese communities in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Monterey. Other images include historic and natural landmarks such as Cliff House in San Francisco, Carmel Mission, Brigham Young House, Santa Cruz Arches, The Salt Lake Tabernacle under construction, Hotel Del Monte, and Redwood trees. Dimensions: 7 1/4" x 11 1/2". Condition: Foxing, staining, and discoloration throughout the album most of which is on the paper margins, not much on the actual images. The spine has separated but has been reattached. Overall fair condition. Provenance: The album was acquired by Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Franklin Smith on a trip through the American west from April to September 1886. Provenance: Deaccessioned from the Sippican Historical Society.

Cook, Taber took over Carleton E. Watkins' negatives and gallery in the 1870s when Watkins went bankrupt. Later in 1906 Taber himself lost his gallery and negatives, which included 80 tons of portrait negatives and 20 tons of view negatives, in the devastating fire which followed the San Francisco earthquake. - Slightly faded in edges, one with light scuff marks in upper left corner, otherwise in very good condition.
