    • Signed 19th C. Japanese Meiji Beisaku Woodcut Triptych
      May. 14, 2020

Signed 19th C. Japanese Meiji Beisaku Woodcut Triptych

      Est: $400 - $600

Taguchi Beisaku (Japanese, 1864-1903). Sino-Japanese War woodcut triptych, 1894 to 1895 (Meiji Period). Beisaku's signature and seal at lower right. Additional stamp at lower left perhaps identifying the scene. A triptych depicting the Sino-Japanese War woodcut (oban) featuring a soldier on horseback and a figure walking alongside the horse and rider making their way through a severe snowstorm. Notice interesting details such as the snow goggles they wear and the beautiful Japanese architecture in the background at the left. Beisaku created several compositions to depict the Sino-Japanese War in which troops fought valiantly in freezing temperatures, facing the enemy in snow and ice. Set in custom framing under glass. Size: 26.375" W x 13.25" H (67 cm x 33.7 cm); 36" W x 22.5" H (91.4 cm x 57.2 cm) framed. Beisaku studied with Nakamura Banzan (Japanese, b. 1834) and later with Kobayashi Kiyochika (Japanese, 1847-1915). With his Sino-Japanese War series, Beisaku emerged as a recognized print artist, creating several war triptychs that while somewhat reminiscent of Kiyochika's style were undeniably more advanced in the figural presentation. Beisaku was also the director of Kiyochika's art school in the mid-1890s, and from then on worked at the Marumaru chinbun. Sadly, he passed away at the early age of 39 in 1903. Provenance: Estate of William Stockton, Colorado, USA; acquired between July 20, 1966 and January 7, 1974 while Mr. Stockton was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. During this period he traveled primarily to Korea, but also to Japan, Vietnam, and other countries in Southeast Asia. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #150818
